Is it normal for bathroom renovations to cost this much?!

I might be completely out of the loop here, so please tell me if I'm being unrealistic.

We've had a quote of £16,500 Inc VAT to renovate our small wetroom ensuite and main bathroom. It's labour and materials but doesn't include bath/shower toilet etc. Based just outside of London in Hertfordshire.

Cost includes Ensuite: stripping everything back, re-tiling, concealed shower, widening the ensuite entrance and installing a door.

Main bathroom: same as the above (except the door) and changing the layout to include a separate bath and shower.

Is this a decent price or on the expensive side?

It’s very dependent on location so beware of taking too much advice from people not living close to you. I got 3 quotes all of 30k or more just to upgrade a small shower room in central London. If I mention it to friends who live in other areas they find it hard to believe but it’s normal for central London. One of the quotes was from John Lewis the other two from local companies

We've just had our family bathroom and separate loo completely gutted.

The bathrooms walls had to be taken back to the brick and then replastered. We installed bath with shower over and basin in the bathroom, and toilet/ sink in the loo. I

I'd say we went for mid price on all that, and on the tiles. Including installation we came in at about £11.5k, which covers dipping into the contingency for the nightmare plasterwork we found behind the old tiles!

We're in N Yorks.

@Keepthepeace82 we have just replaced 2 internal doors downstairs. £150 each and £60 each for labour. Certainly not £1000.

(And they are really nice doors)

11.5K for a small bathroom in Glasgow October 2021.
Included 1K for vanity, and about 3K for shower and toilet.

We are paying £15k for our bathroom- total re-fit.

I am absolutely astounded by the amount people have paid for bathrooms! I thought ours was expensive but some of these are eye watering!

Definitely a different ball game as you're in London/the South East. I am too, and got a quote for 12k and then 10k for labour. Main bathroom only but I also needed structural work as we're moving a wall and the shower, toilet and sink. Having things like wetrooms will also bump up your cost - we considered a wetroom-style shower and fitter said that would be almost an extra 1k as it needs special materials and more labour.

I started a thread about it here and lots of London-based posters agreed that my quotes were about the current going price.

That sounds pricey but I know many trades are pretty much able to name their price particularly for jobs they aren’t too fussed about. I had my bathroom done 18 months ago (SW) which was stripping tiles, replastering, screeding and tiling floor, new toilet and new bath/shower enclosed unit (no plumbing was moved). Plus bits and bobs like new light fitting, installation of cupboard, mirror. It cost c£7k including the bath unit which was £1500.
