Switching from Economy 7

SpanishPapers · 08/03/2022 09:08

We’re on Economy 7 (done by previous owner).

I prefer a normal tariff. Does anyone know how to go about switching- so I need a new meter fitted?

Thanks.

Do you have storage heaters?
If so, they charge up overnight and that's why economy 7 is best for that type of system

Why on earth would you get rid of economy 7? I set my washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer to all run during the economy 7 period. Half price electricity whilst the day rate is the same rate as everyone else is paying. Why do you want to stop it?

ImAvingOops · 08/03/2022 09:12

I'm interested in this because I too have Economy 7. When I queried this a few years ago with my supplier they said it wouldn't work out cheaper. You'd still have storage heaters and your hot water tank would be heating up overnight at a more expensive rate.
You would need to change meter I think, because yours is measuring 2 different rates, and normal meters only measure 1

Going off thread a little bit but if you have NSH then worth considering Economy 10 instead. 5hrs at night, 2.5hrs in the afternoon and 2.5hrs in the evening.
Means your NSH are charging multiple times so you don't have to wake up in the morning to a hot house which then looses it's warmth by evening, it maintains a more constant temperature.
When it comes to hot water it is even better, we replaced our tank with one half the size as it was now being heated 3-times a day (also meant we gained useful space in the airing cupboard).
Also means you can run the washing machine, tumble drier & dishwasher at more convenient times.

Many suppliers still support E10 but fewer actually provide it to new customers but the list of those that do is still significant and of course you can always swop supplier (we were with Eon).

Thanks, all. We don't have storage heaters and we don't use very much electricity at night so E7 is more expensive for us.

@Nosnogginginthekitchen Our day rate is higher than it would be on a normal tariff- I think that's standard for E7 (otherwise everyone would be on it!)

That's odd. I compared my day rate to non E7 users and it was the same. Maybe I'm just lucky here. Shame I'm moving!

Dougieowner · 08/03/2022 10:03

If you don't have NSH then I agree, it is probably not the tariff for you.

BluTangClan · 08/03/2022 22:57

Our E7 day rate is only a little bit higher than the standard tariff day rate.
The night rate is half of the day rate.

On the back of this thread, I finally read the instructions for my washing machine and set the timer to come on during the cheap rate. I never used to bother but price of electricity I really should try to get some benefit from E7

Calmdown14 · 09/03/2022 12:02

Are you still on all electric heating?
I have economy 10 and some storage heaters and some normal wall heaters.
We are on economy 10 so like above we set dishwasher and washing machine and other heaters to the cheap times.
If you don't have electric heating it doesn't make sense

User0610134049 · 09/03/2022 12:04

I’ll double check mine but last time I looked our economy 7 day rate was significant higher than those on a normal tariff.
We don’t have storage heaters and I looked into changing - what I read online was encouraging in that I think they either let you keep your meter but just combine the two readings and charge one rate, or will change the meter for free

Wilma55 · 09/03/2022 12:05

They can just add the two readings together.

EenyMeenyMinyNo · 09/03/2022 18:16

I have a dual rate meter but a single rate tariff. They just set the same cost per kwh to each reading and add them together. You just need to ask your supplier to switch to a single rate tariff.

i have economy 7 BUT the circuits are only set up to power the hot water and the storage heating. so no benefit putting the washing machine on overnight.

so really depends how the circuits are set up (we briefly had a smart meter - which then just charged anything at night at a cheaper rate BUT they missed off my E7 Circuit from the connection so had to have it removed asap)
