Bedroom colours

I’m looking for some opinions on bedroom colours please. My bedroom is currently painted in a light colour. It looks nice but is marked, old and tired looking. I’m debating whether to repaint in a really dark colour, something like f&b railings, pelt or tanners brown. What would your preference be for bedrooms? Dark and cosy or light and airy? Or somewhere in between I guess! Woodwork and ceiling would be white and it’s a period house if that helps? Any really nice colours to suggest? Thanks in advance

We like fairly light and airy and take into account where the windows are and what direction they face.

We have Farrow and Ball: Cornforth white, Peignoir, Borrowed light, Elephants Breath snd Wevet. We use Wimborne white on all woodwork.

PrinnyPree · 06/03/2022 23:52

I'm also of the light and airy opinion, but we do have small bedrooms in a 1930s semi, Skylight for our bedroom, Peignoir for the guest and Green Ground for the nursery. X

I do have darker richer colours downstairs.

I think a period property would probably cope with darker colours better than ours. Go for it! It's not irreversible. X

Just one (tall) east facing sash window with shutters. Thank you for comments so far. I had looked at peignoir on f&b but was put off by some comments about it bring mauve/lilac in certain lights. Is that your experience? I also looked at dead salmon and jitney. I’ve used a lot of sage and olive green and neutrals in other rooms so far. Definitely don’t want another green room even though I love the ones I’ve already done. It’s a big room so paint will cost a fair bit and take a lot of time I don’t have! Don’t really want to do it twice so just a big nervous about going dark and hating it.

What about doing one darker/feature wall and the rest a more neutral?

singlepringlenotbychoice · 07/03/2022 00:38

My room is painted in farrow and ball off black. All the walls. It's a big room that's south facing with 2 good sized windows so can take being dark. I love it

I used Preference Red on the wall behind the bed with the other walls with Dimity on the others, its a large room, high ceilings but the not very light, absolutely love it, its very striking with light wood furniture and wood floor. Bedding all white with shades of deep pink/cream in different materials and patterns for pillow cases/throws and the dreaded cushions!

Rest of the house is a mix of colours, I do like to play around with different colours.......not a bit of grey though.

In a period home I lived in previous we did the bedroom in a kind of shade like sudbury yellow as it matched small parts of the fireplace tiles, loved that as well, but all the walls were that colour, matched it with shades of green/cream with a little black here and there.

@Ratsindahouse
Peignoir is an unusual colour and, like a number of colours, can take on the light around it. Therefore it looks slightly different in the evenings from how it looks in the morning. Our bedroom faces south snd west. Peignoir looks darker in the evening but with a very dusky slightly warmer hue. I have it with pale pink paisley bed cover and white bed linen and white furniture. We have a pale pink chair in the room and white Venetian blinds with white linen long curtains as well. It’s a feminine room. I think it looks warm and inviting and it’s not a blue/lilac colour.

In a previous house, we had this colour which I really like

If you think Peignoir may be too lilac, try China Clay range from Little Green. A cleaner colour-we have deep in our spare room, se facing and love it.

I'm looking at stiffkey blue on the chimney wall in our bedroom, it has a window either side of the chimney. The rest of the walls will be white and I'm going to paint some drawers to match and have them on the opposite wall. I've always rented so lived with white/magnolia walls for 13 years, I can't wait to try something bolder Smile. It's a period house so hopefully won't look crap!

Orchidsonthetable · 07/03/2022 08:13

Normally I’d say light, but we painted our bedroom in f&b pigeon, which is in between light and dark, if that makes sense, it’s not light but it’s not too dark either, a grey green and it’s lovely.

helpmum2003 · 07/03/2022 08:16

Brighton from Little Greene is a gorgeous turquoise. Definitely not pale but not too dark either..

Lunaballoon · 07/03/2022 08:34

I had the same issue recently. I love F&B DeNimes but chickened out at doing the whole room in what for me is a fairly dark colour.

In the end, I did half the room in DeNimes and the rest in Cornforth white, which is a lovely soft grey. I absolutely love the two together!

TizerorFizz · 07/03/2022 08:51

@Lunaballoon
We have DeNimes in our cloakroom. We have a huge mirror in there but it’s a wonderful colour. I considered it for our dining room but went Setting Plaster instead. I’m pleased we did. It’s absolutely the right choice.

For me a bedroom is a place of rest and restoration, so colour must respect that - this can be done with both soft and saturated colours, but I would be led by how bright and airy the room. If a room is naturally darker I would play into the darker cosy feel, if it has big windows letting in lots of light I would go more gentle pastel colours rather than fight it.

I personally love terracotta tones and think Deluxe Heritage Red Sand and Inca Orange can be lovely.

I also love white/cream/pale walls with a dark ceiling for a cosy feel.

TizerorFizz · 07/03/2022 11:55

This is Peignoir.

This is Peignoir.
Peignoir looked very pink in my house. I had to paint over it with Skimming Stone!
Aniita · 07/03/2022 18:17

I was going to suggest sage green, it looks fab in my east facing bedroom.

If you want cosy but light, consider white pepper by crown. It's a gorgeous pinky taupe that just glows when the light hits it. The online sample colour looks so bland in comparison to how it looks irl. I'm in love

Rebuildingconfidence · 07/03/2022 20:32

I have a South facing bedroom I'm about to paint white, red earth and bancha. I veer between excitement and fear!

DogsAndGin · 07/03/2022 20:49

I do think period houses were MADE for dark bold colours. We tried to get a light airy feeling but I think ours is just bland and boring Sad I vote bold and dramatic!

itsnotdeep · 07/03/2022 20:51

Mine is pelt on all the walls and ceiling. It's a big room with tall ceilings.

looks lovely. I actually love it. Faces South West

but... I am going to paint it brilliant white I think.

Ratsindahouse · 09/03/2022 01:45

Thank you all for the comments. Still mulling it over but have just painted the en-suite in dark aubergine and love it. Think I may continue into the bedroom!

@Aniita which sage green did you use? We have an easy facing bedroom and are looking for paint ideas. This thread has inspired me. I like sage green but haven’t yet found the right one.

@Classicblunder i've had a sample of that stuck to my wall for months. you don't have any pics of it in real life do you? there aren't many available online. i'm hesitating in case it's too blue blue

Ratsindahouse · 09/03/2022 22:45

KloppsTeeth I can recommend Little Greene Sir Lutyens Sage. Not east facing but I used this in the smallest bedroom and love it.
