Just a little hack I may/may not have invented…..

We had new carpets fitted this week and on the stairs I was gutted to see there was some old yellowed gloss visible on the sides of the staircase/bannister as they were a slightly different fit to the old carpets.

Enter…..a white grout pen! Tidied the edges up perfect and now gleaming white to match the rest of the staircase wood. No risk of spilling or running or blobbing the new carpet. Just wanted to share if it was useful for anyone needing to touch paint up in awkward places!

ooh thats good ,

In a few weeks I am getting a new wood floor fitted and may well have the same problems do I will keep a eye open for a grout pen next time I am out shopping
Thank you Smile

I just got a 2-pack of grout pens for about £6 on Amazon and it’s worked so well! Was so cross at myself for not quickly painting the staircase before, I assumed that the new carpet would just cover it but it’s a much better fit than the old 80s one it replaced so it left some obvious gaps.

Wood floor sounds lovely Smile

I go to Wilkos quite often so I will have a look in there , but Amazon them if I need to .
Does it show at all ? my skirting boards are high gloss , I dont want dull / matt patches

Ooh good tip thank you, we actually did get all wood work done before carpets but when they’ve hammered in the stair carpet there are chips here and there (showing up the delightful mahogany varnish that lies beneath) so will be trying this !

You can’t really tell the finish - I’ve used the grout pen on a few millimetres just round the edge of the carpet so it’s impossible to tell. The new carpets are a pale taupe and the staircase is white so the old yellowed paint was really obvious!

Grin We had some dark varnish in other parts of the house too - swirly carpets and lots of varnish seemed a popular choice with the previous owners!

Brilliant!!!!

Thanks so much OP, we've had one room done where horrible peeling patches have been exposed, and we are about to have the rest of the house done. Off to buy white grout pens now!

@OldMillenial OP are the pens very 'wet' or 'dry', as in does the grout liquid come flowing out if you keep pressing? Our skirting needs more than just a bit of touching up, so ideally the pens would allow lots of liquid out as you press.

No, it doesn’t flow out - more like a juicy marker pen. I only needed it for a few mm of old paint above the line of the new carpet and it was perfect for that

We had new wood floors recently and knew they weren't planning to use beading (which was there previously) so I got a guy in to remove the beading and repaint the skirting before the flooring was done.
