Do gates match the front door?!

So, had some new gates fitted today. 3 bed traditional semi. Gates are level with the front of the house and close off the side of the house.

Front door is anthracite grey. Windows are just white with stained glass.

Do we paint them grey to match or leave them 'wood' coloured?

Or some other colour like a nice muted green?

Opinions please! My Dad has just said your gate has to match your front door!!!

Pic?

I don’t think the have to match, but they shouldn’t clash/jar.

Wood will age and change colour over time anyway
Paint will need re-doing every few years

Will get a pic but it's basically like this - same type of house.

My door and the curved bay are both anthracite grey .

Hmm

Perhaps live with it for a bit and see how it sits. I think probably grey but you can’t (easily) go back once it’s done!

Do you love grey? Or was it chosen as it’s modern/popular?

Leaving them as wood would look fine, I should think.

If I painted them I'd have them either white like the windows or anthracite like the front door. It would look a bit weird if they were a third colour.

no

most likely treat them to blend with the fence and other garden furniture

as they are exposed to the weather they will get wet in rain and dew and need a timber preservative plus a breathing stain. Not a gloss finish or varnish. Paint will prevent them drying out and will blister and accelerate rot. If you want, you can use a wood dye to darken and colour the timber before using your stain. This will look better than using a tinted stain which will look shabby when it erodes.

I find the "decking stains" are more durable and look better than shed-and-fence stains.

I am toying with adding a lych-gate roof over my gate to protect it.

No i'm not a massive fan of grey. Our front door is lovely, but there was no way I was having grey windows and there's no grey paint in the house!
