Is this room too small for a corner sofa?

Our lounge is tiny and narrow, and we are trying to figure out the best way to get a decent amount of seating in.

Dh thinks corner sofa in the top left (longest bit on longer wall). I think itll look ridiculous to walk into the room and immediately have the sofa right in front of you (most of the corner sofas we have looked at are 204cm on the shorter side).

Please could anyone suggest alternative sofa (and tv) layouts for us?

Thanks in advance

Oh and the other annoying detail is that the radiator is under the window and the tv socket is in the bottom right corner.

A small room needs small flexible furniture not one massive corner sofa.

What about a regular sofa & a footstool?

Sofa on wall opposite the door.
TV on the same wall as the door.
Bookshelf or display cabinets on the wall opposite the window.

excuse the tiny picture, but my living room is similar sized (don't think of it as particularly small though!) and this is what we have - also small side tables either side of the sofa.

Our room isn't far off of this size and we went for a two seater (with quite narrow arms) and one of those large "cuddler" chairs. If we have family around we can fit two or three on the two seater and two on the chair very comfortably. We also have a footstool with hidden storage that can be used as seating if necessary.

It's the depth of the sofa as much as anything. Some of the corner ones are a metre deep.
You could perhaps get away with a more compact chaise style with something to put your feet on under the window. These are often less bulky overall.
I'd focus on depth first. Some of the more mid century style might be better as the legs etc would feel less imposing

I have a tiny house so this kind of thing is very much On My Mind.

A corner sofa is actually very space saving because it means every square foot of space is actually sittable on, whereas two standalone items, like a sofa + armchair or two small sofas have a dead space in between them.

The IKEA Ektorp sofa is tiny and will fit - I think it's only 285cm x 285 cm, and it's also not very deep, but has lots of storage space underneath it too.

This sofa is also very small - it was there in my history because I was looking at it a couple of weeks ago:

We have the Ektorp corner sofa and one of its many virtues is the fact that the covers go in the wash.

We have a small living room but a GIANT corner sofa. I agree with @astoundedgoat. We wanted to be able to sit down together (5 of us) to watch films etc. It’s also very useful as a bed for a couple of nights as it’s super comfy.

minipie · 04/03/2022 15:16

I agree with your DH if there are several of you who might watch tv together, eg you have older children.

However if you have babies/toddlers and you need space more than seating then I would go with a 2.5/3 seater on the long wall and then save the rest of the space for play space and storage.

If you have no DC then either!

How about putting one side of the corner sofa under the window? As long as the back isn't too high i think it'd look fine, then you could put the TV on the wall opposite!

Jamnation · 04/03/2022 16:54

I'm with @astoundedgoat, it sounds contradictory but it's actually a really space-efficient way to seat people. YY to going for something like mid-century style to minimise wasted depth and arms.

I would not go with one of the in-between style that has a sticky out bit on one side. They are great for lounging if you have space but not so good for efficiency. Either go whole hog with a true L shape or have a normal sofa with a separate footstool. But you might want to just pick one out of footstool and coffee table or getting to the sofa could be a bit of an obstacle course.

Yep - one side of our corner sofa is under the window and it's nice.

We have a huge corner sofa in a small living room, it came with us from our previous house and we were going to get rid in favour of separate sofa+chair but actually as PP say it is really space saving.

New30 · 04/03/2022 17:03

Similar size sofa here and we had the configuration that you suggest in your first post - it really didn’t work with the room and we have just sold it and got 2 smaller sofas - it is a million times better!

Halllyup17 · 04/03/2022 17:06

Corner sofas are daft. One cushion has zero leg room, and the two either side can only fit one person unless you like kicking each other. Our four seater only comfortably fits two people on it. If you want a decent amount of seating, get straight sofas or chairs.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/03/2022 17:09

One big corner sofa is fine if the room is just for watching TV in. Do you have another space in the house you spend time playing/eating/lego out etc.

We are similar and have the same set up except our sofa is officially a 3 seater but it's quite small. We then have a central square coffee table. We have room for another armchair but it's our second lounge and we have the musical instruments in there.
StrawberryLadybird · 04/03/2022 17:34

Thanks everyone. I like the idea of having a corner sofa under the window a lot but there is the radio and tv point there annoyingly! Although maybe we could just have it an inch or two pulled out? No idea how to move a tv socket though. I can see how the corner sofas are space saving too.

We have a baby whose toys are in there currently but we are planning on putting those in a separate playroom once we are organised so toy storage isn't an issue. It's mainly just a cosy place to watch tv/read/have a takeaway!

Our family room is about 3m by 4.5 m and we have a corner sofa.

Although our room is longer (21ft) it’s quite narrow at 10ft and currently being used as a diner due to covid and DH using the dining room as an office

We have the ikea Gronlid sofa system which you can build as a corner or alter to be just a sofa, you can order single sections or corners to make it fit any room. It also has washable replaceable covers so if you want a colour change you can
