Whether I am mad to install gas central heating now?!

Currently on oil, with a boiler that will need replacing soon (2008). Very inefficient,noisy and about to have kitchen redone. The current boiler is huge and takes a big space

Have spent months looking into air source heat pump, and not viable.

It's about £1,500 + boiler to install gas from main road.
Would you do it? Have been told by a friend that I am mad with the Russia situation, and am now so confused
First world problem compared to the poor souls in Ukraine, I know ....

No

It is currently the best option, if you can get ut.

Rummikub · 27/02/2022 11:21

Is it 2025 when the govt are saying no new gas boilers to be fitted?

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/02/2022 11:39

No 2035

Yetanothernamechange123 · 27/02/2022 12:06

@PigletJohn
Yes can get connected without problems.
Think I will go ahead, as getting a new oil boiler seems ridiculous?
I would have loved to have gone for ashp option, but just not feasible

I thought there was economic incentives to replace oil fired heating to gas/ashp?

Geekygeek · 27/02/2022 12:32

Installed a new gas boiler last year (old one died). Had a good looks at heat source, but incentives in no way offset the additional cost.

Hopefully will become feasible over the next 10ys if the government get themselves in gear re: net zero.

LemonViolet · 27/02/2022 12:34

Sounds like your best option OP, as frustrating as that is environmentally.

What made the ASHP unfeasible? Did you have anyone visit the property to advise on it? Out of interest.

elbea · 27/02/2022 12:42

Have you looked at ground source and biomass too? There are new grants of up to £5,000 coming shortly to help replace old, inefficient boilers with new technologies

Yetanothernamechange123 · 27/02/2022 12:52

@Geekygeek
Exactly - ashp in the region of £16k
(needed high power one + rad replacements) and then v expensive to run and not feasible for an older building.
Ground source £30k!! Because of geology.
Ideally need underfloor heating another £15k.

No instant heat, so not really appropriate for our lifestyle anyway

So the £5k grant is actually laughable!
Hoping things will change

I'd still go with gas. Those heat pumps only work in extremely well insulated properties and do not provide instant heat, just a background type heat. Our relatives took advantage of some scheme of other and I notice they still mainly seem to need several woodburners in various rooms to keep their huge house warm.

ceramicheart · 27/02/2022 16:18

Go with gas boiler whilst you still can!
Heat pumps are rubbish
