Boiler help please

I have moved into a new house with an old ish Worcester Greenstar boiler. This is in the loft and to control it there is a digistat box on the wall downstairs.

To start we had no hot water so I went up in the loft and have set the hot water to "on". The other choices were once twice or off. It was off.

Will this cost me loads of money to keep it on that setting? We don't have a bath so the hot water will be for washing up.

I'm not sure why you'd leave the hot water to always be heating water? Twice is the standard, surely? It'd heat it twice a day and be hot when you need it as long as you don't use the whole water tank.

Doesn't the box on wall let you set a timer for it to come on and off?

pilates · 25/02/2022 07:12

Twice a day is pretty normal. An hour first thing in the morning and hour late afternoon. I presume you have an electric shower.

Mindymomo · 25/02/2022 07:12

You need to set the timer for the water to come on when you want. Or you could try it on the twice setting to see if any times have been entered to see if this is enough for you.

Mindymomo · 25/02/2022 07:15

Also if it’s a combi boiler which I think it is, it will heat hot water instantly when you use it, so yes you can just leave it to on button, as it will only heat water when required.

Livedandlearned · 25/02/2022 07:17

I'll try twice then, thanks everyone

The box on the wall doesn't seem to have a water timer just heating.

It is a combi boiler

If you go onto Google and type in the make and model number you might be able to find a PDF of the user manual that you can download and read. Or try the manufacturers website.

Combi boilers only fire up for hot water when you run the taps

Livedandlearned · 25/02/2022 07:30

Good idea about the PDF

Does the box downstairs allow you to programme times?

Bagelsandbrie · 25/02/2022 07:33

If it’s a combi you just leave it on - it will only heat as much as you need as it heats it when you run the tap.

Livedandlearned · 25/02/2022 13:31

The box downstairs only lets me program the heating as far as I can see but I haven't put the heating into twice yet, if I do the option might appear on the box downstairs.

I have an old Worcester Greenstart boiler (it's brilliant). Mine has a timer set in on the top right that gives you the options to set the times for the hot water to come on and off (once, twice, on, off) and separate settings to control the heating. The thermostat is separate and just controls the temperature for the central heating.

Livedandlearned · 27/02/2022 12:26

Thanks @whirlyhead I need to sit and figure it out
