What colour kitchen cabinets - respraying

I hate my kitchen. It's dark and it's tiny. So I've decided I want to redecorate it. I can't afford a brand new kitchen (plus hope to sell in a few years) so have decided I want my kitchen cabinets resprayed, self-adhesive tile stickers over the current tiles (that cover all the walls and window sill, and a new kitchen sink. Don't know if I'll change the dark green counters. Floor is staying as that was new a couple of years ago.

Kitchen is south facing but has a conservatory attached to it. The dark brown glass door and window frame will be resprayed white.

So what colour should my kitchen cabinets be? I was thinking something a lot lighter, maybe with a blue tint to tie in with the blue colour in some of the LVT.

And what colour/type of stick on tiles should I get?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Photos are from when we put our house up for sale in 2020. Sale fell through so we decided to stick it out for longer.

I would go with a light colour on the top ones and a different darker colour on the bottom. Maybe white, cream or pale grey or even a pale blush on the top and a darker colour on the bottom. Blush and a blue grey might be nice together.

If I wasn't feeling brave I'd go with an off white greige colour probably Shaded White (which I would say because that's the colour of my kitchen!) but I think it would work with your worktops and your floors which both seem to have quite different tones to them.

If I was feeling brave I'd pick a green that is already in your worktops and then use that on the bottom cupboards with a complimentary white/off white on the top ones

Figmentofimagination · 23/02/2022 11:16

I hadn't considered two different colours for the cabinets. Not sure if I feel brave enough for it.
Also hadn't considered a pale blush either. We're going paint colour shopping at weekend so I can get an idea of what I like, so I'll have a look at your recommendations.

We repainted my MIL’s kitchen last year. The cupboards were darker than those in your pictures. We painted them in a pale grey and it made an absolutely massive difference to the kitchen. It looked so much lighter and more airy. We then re-tiled with white metro tiles, which made it look even brighter still. We didn’t change anything else at all but it looked like a completely different kitchen

Figmentofimagination · 23/02/2022 18:04

That's good to know @Charlottle . I'm hoping it makes a huge difference. We did notice a big difference when we changed our brown front door for white on the inside. Made the north facing hallway so much lighter.

Oh wow @Holothane , that is amazing. I definitely wouldn't be brave enough for that, plus we want to eventually sell in a few years. This work is to improve things for us but make it more appealing to sell.

I’ve just done mine! Have now got very pale sage green (aka f&b mizzle). It’s made the room look huuuuge

Figmentofimagination · 23/02/2022 20:09

@AtillatheHun That's what I'm hoping for with repainting ours. Making it seem a bit bigger because it's quite narrow.
I will have a look at Farrow & Ball mizzle and their other colours as well.

I was going to say a shade of green would be fab (sage, mint etc) but that would be too much green with the worktop. Unless you’re willing to change the worktops too?

Navy can be lovely too.

I painted mine last year and went for a simple, plain cream. I love it but sometimes wish I had been more daring!

I wouldn’t worry too much about selling. Most people will want to rip it out and put in a new kitchen

We did ours in Little Greene Blue
China deep.

@TheDuchessOfMN - I don't think I'm going to change the counters. My friend recommended I put a wrap on them but I don't know if I'm confident enough to do that.

@Abra1d1 - that is a lovely colour. I will look at little greenie's range as well.

Is the counter real stone? If so I would keep it. If not, I'd change it for something more neutral.
If selling I'd go with an off-white and perhaps wood or wood effect counters.
Have you considered painting the tiles rather than using stick ons? think it would be much more durable.

Itscoldouthere · 25/02/2022 08:02

I’d also recommend painting the tiles and then maybe stencil them, they currently have a peach colour to them which you’d need to consider if you keep them and jut add stickers.
Are you on Instagram ? If so check out #cracktheshutters she has a video showing all the steps to paint and stencil her bathroom tiles.

Figmentofimagination · 25/02/2022 15:39

No the counter isn't real stone. Think it's mdf 🤷🏻‍♀️. And no I hadn't considered painting tiles. I didn't know you could do that.

Sorry to jump on your thread OP- I’m considering doing similar.
Are any PPs that have repainted happy to put before and after pics? And did you just paint doors or carcass too? I have very old dark brown wood doors.

MuchTooTired · 25/02/2022 23:08

I spray painted mine. Had some posh paint brand colour (I think it was little greene ultra blue) knocked up by brewers in their paint, primed with zinseneer and spray painted in the blue. It was a dark brown kitchen I’d got off of eBay for £100. As a bonus it matched my flip flops at the time Grin

I only painted the doors and the underside of the carcasses I could see. I also wrapped the worktops, which I was nervous to do and it worked brilliantly. It’s only a temporary kitchen really, one day it’ll be ripped out and replaced, but not by us hopefully!

Please don't use tile stickers, use tile paint! Much better finish.
