Can you buy a house for less than 100k where you are?

I'm in rural Pennsylvania (USA). I bought our house this past summer (August) for $70k. 4 bed, 2 full baths, play room, dining room, and office/gaming area for my teen off of the living room. Has a large yard and garage. Here you just go to the local school district (catchment if you will).

I had a frozen pipe which is costing me 4k to fix and redo kitchen. Put about 2500 into random things for maintenance and aesthetics. 5400 for new carpet. I estimate another 20-25k for more updates in the next few years.

It seems most of the posts I read on here are about palaces 300k and up. So I was just curious.

I'm in the west coast of Scotland and what you described would cost about £120k where I am. It's a nice area, 10 minute walk in to town and about 30 minutes to the beach.

It does shock me how much 1 bed flats go for in some places, you could get one for about £50-£60k around here.

emmathedilemma · 22/02/2022 10:30

no! 3 retirement apartments (the one on at offers over £100k I'm not counting) and some garages / parking spaces are the only things under £100k in the whole of Edinburgh

In parts of Scotland - 100,000 would buy a huge old castle.

That isn't a ruin? Where?

User48751490 · 22/02/2022 11:18

Lots. Spoilt for choice.

DrCoconut · 22/02/2022 11:56

There are plenty of houses under £100k here. But it's a depressed area and many people move away for better opportunities. However, if you are settled and happy here then housing is ok.

nearlyspringyay · 22/02/2022 12:08

No, nothing at all here. You need 200k+ for a one bed flat.

My American relatives are always shocked we live in 1000sq ft, then they find out the price and are horrified. Fil is in a massive five bed with a communal pool, double garage, dressing rooms, en-suite to all bedrooms and it was only £300k

IsItTooHotInHere · 22/02/2022 12:11

I'm in East Midlands, England. The houses on my street are 3 bedroomed, semi-detached, 1930s houses. The cheapest is £180k

RuthW · 22/02/2022 12:12

You can get a flat for about 170k here

nanohana · 22/02/2022 12:14

This is under offer, but 4 bedrooms for 75K

Nope. We're currently looking and for what you describe we'd be looking at £600-700k. It's depressing

Comedycook · 22/02/2022 12:17

Lucky you op. I'm so jealous of houses in America. They seem huge to me! I live in London. You can't even buy a studio flat where I live for 100k. A three bed narrow terrace is over 500k where I live. A large detached would be over a million. It's so depressing

CharlotteRose90 · 22/02/2022 12:19

I’m in Manchester and you can buy an ok house for that in various parts. Just depends where you look.

irregularegular · 22/02/2022 12:20

Not a chance. Village in oxfordshire. Cheapest property for same currently (other than retirement flats) is a small 2 bed maisonette for £295k. Cheapest actual (but tiny) house is £380k.

We bought a house for under 100k near here in 1994...

APurpleSquirrel · 22/02/2022 12:26

I'm in a semi-rural town on the Devon/Somerset border (SW England).
£100k will buy a studio or 1-bed flat.
To get what you have would be over £500k & more like £700k if you want land.

Whitefire · 22/02/2022 12:29

We just sold MIL house for 85k. Mid terrace, 3 bed, 2 reception rooms, needed some work (kitchen, bathroom, heating)

That is in NE England where property is generally cheaper.

Okigen · 22/02/2022 12:31

I live in London. £100k will get you a garage or a half a boathouse here. My tiny, bog-standard two-bed costs me more than 3 times of that amount. I love the city though.

kirinm · 22/02/2022 12:47

A one bedroom flat here would cost c£450k (SE London). £100k is a deposit.

pradavilla · 22/02/2022 12:50

No. I'm near Glasgow and u can't get a house for £100k or under in my town. U might get a small 2 bed terrace in a less desirable area of the town for just over £100K but it wld be a doer upper. The little tiny 2bed semi across the road from me went for £165k at end of summer and isn't the best looking inside with a tiny garden etc. I was shocked. Prices are going up so much.

gogohm · 22/02/2022 12:52

Here the only thing you can buy under £150k is a caravan/park home and you have to pay site fees each year (there's several all year developments near here mostly for over 55's). A studio flat is £200k

chesirecat99 · 22/02/2022 12:55

You could buy a parking space or a houseboat (just the boat, the mooring rental is extra) for £100k in London.

Once you discount the short leases (10-15 years), shared ownership schemes (starting at £125k for a 25% share), hotel rooms, and the "starting prices" for auctions, the cheapest property for sale in my borough is an ex council flat for £275k for a 1 bedroom flat in a tower block.

According to RightMove, the average price of a home is £1.9 million. £1.5 million for a flat, £3 million for a terraced house, £5.3 million for a semi detached house. Detached houses are virtually non-existent in the borough. Prices in Central London are insane. My home is well below average Grin

Rewis · 22/02/2022 12:55

Yes you can. The cheapest flat in the area is €20k. It is a studio in a town of 6000 people without a high street and closest city is an hour drive.

In the city you can get 2 bed flats for €60k. The flats are nice but they are in an undesirable are and will lose value very quickly.

gogohm · 22/02/2022 12:59

Hartlepool is a usually one of the cheapest places to buy but the houses are very small and need total renovation (for a family buying 2 and knocking through might work!) most likely they are sold at auction. Currently there's properties for a £5k guide price. Of course there's a reason they are cheap...

NerrSnerr · 22/02/2022 13:36

I live in Gloucestershire and the cheapest in my local area is a 1 bed flat for £130k. The cheapest house is a 2 bed terrace on the main road for £230k.

Lastqueenofscotland · 22/02/2022 13:37

You can probably get an absolute dump of a two bed terrace that will need taking back to bare brick
