Full rewire - what else is needed (future proofing)

We're unexpectedly having to get our house rewired..had thought the 50 year old wiring would do for now but we need lots of sockets replaced and added so figured its best to do it all in one hit before we decorate more rooms.

anyway, while they are doing it, what else is worth installing?

I was wondering about getting the wiring sorted for an electric vehicle charge point in case we get one in future. my husband isn't convinced that would be worth it. what do you think?

any other ideas?

We've tried to think about how the kids will use their rooms when older and put in plugs for a computer desk.

will probably get wired smoke alarms but don't feel we need built in wired music systems

any thoughts?

And often people forget to factor in the plastering, replacement of damaged coving/skirting etc, possible replacement of some floorboards if they don’t lift easily and refitting of carpets, possibly storage of household items including stuff in loft if you’re clearing the house, possibly having to replace or refit some loft insulation and then decorating every room afterwards.

It’s horrendous. We were told that if a house hasn’t been rewired since the 70s/80s it will almost certainly need it now. Ours hadn’t been done since the house was built in the 50s.

Also, have a think about having all sockets at floor level, or a mix of floor level and waist height.

Yes our house was built in 1950s. Was original wiring. We had thousands of dead ants on the cables in walls where they had been electricities from dodgy electrics so it is a fire hazard and dangerous.

It was there 70 years. If this new stuff lasts 70 years it won’t be my mess or problem to do again!
