Reasonable cost for a new fence (SE England)

Like a lot of other people we need a new back fence after Storm Eunice. We’ll be sharing the cost with our neighbour but the first quote (from someone who I know would do an excellent job) is very expensive. What’s a reasonable cost for fencing (say per metre) - we would like good quality so it lasts but it can look plain as neither of us can really see it from our houses!

We ordered 75ft of new fencing ( the Hit or Miss type as it is very open where we live) which was 12 panels 6ftx6ft, 15 concrete posts and postcrete on Saturday it came to just under £1500.

Luckily DH and DS are capable of putting it up so don't need labour.

What kind of fence do you want? We paid 100 quid a metre for a good 6 ft wooden fence, but that was 2 years ago and in the North East. Timber and labour prices have shot up since then, I would think in the SE you would be looking at double that, possibly more? Even then we had to wait due to a shortage of timber, and there will be huge demand due to all the recent storm damage.

Fencing is very expensive.

What you have been quoted is probably reasonable.

There was already a timber shortage. It will be even worse now.

9 x 6' panels; the ones that are vertical slats, wooden posts with concrete foundations, gravel boards and labour - just under £3000.
I'm in SE.

If you can, wait a couple of months as prices at the moment have gone through the roof. I know a fencer, and he says that some people are pretty well offering an open cheque at the moment. I'm in Kent.

Thanks all - that’s really useful and you’re right I’d forgotten about the timber shortage (feeling very tired as we also lost roof tiles overnight so didn’t sleep well). Glad I asked now!

Ignore what I said up thread, in the garden now and it's 14 metres long, not 7 like I thought, we paid 50 quid a metre.

Thanks very much for checking @Tynesider007!
