“Mid century modern” furniture-anyone else suddenly appreciate it?

We’re doing a full house renovation which will eventually involve replacing a lot of furniture.
I was born in 1970 and so was brought up in the era of teak furniture and have always turned my nose up at it…till I saw a set of Ercol pebble tables on a local auction house’s site.
Then I started looking a bit deeper into furniture from the 1960s and 70s and realised it’s such good quality, proper wood instead of chipboard etc…and the style has started to totally grow on me to the point that I think we’ll probably seriously look at it as a definite option for replacing what we have.

Anyone else have an appreciation of this furniture?

It’s been in fashion for years now. Good quality stuff (esp from Danish makers) is no longer a bargain and hasn’t been for a decade or so.

Personally, it’s not for me and doesn’t suit my house but it can look amazing in the right house and styled in the right way. The delicate legs and smaller proportions often suit more modern properties too.

Mablefly · 20/02/2022 16:45

It's been fashionable for years and if other trends are anything to go by will fall out of fashion again soon enough.

That said, I have quite a lot in my house (inherited from my Nan or bought from charity shops) that I have had for over 20 years. I do really love it and think it works fantastically with a mix of styles.

It lasts forever and I love the granny vibe. I find it comforting rather than depressing.

PS I am also stubbornly keeping hold of my crochet loo roll lady no matter how many people (rudely) tell me it's naff or creepy!

throughtheair · 20/02/2022 17:01

It probably will fall out of fashion, and our kids will be filling their homes with vintage 80s black ash

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 20/02/2022 17:07

I love Ercol, particularly the lighter coloured pieces. I'm sure that's just a matter of personal preference / fashion though. It's just higher quality than most things you can buy now.

I've got a sideboard, a couple of chairs, a table, and a stool.

freshcarnation · 20/02/2022 17:24

I've got some teak nesting tables which are great. Also like @GalaPie we've got Stag furniture in our bedroom. We bought it new 35 years ago. We've been doing up the house and had a look to see if there was anything we liked for our room. However the quality of drawers didn't come anywhere near the Stag stuff. I've given it a good clean and changed the handles and it looks great.

catfunk · 20/02/2022 17:28

It's been coming back strongly over the last 5-10 years. It's not a 'new' thing.

Classica · 20/02/2022 17:31

It's been fashionable for the last decade. I was wondering if people were going to start tiring of it soon.

Classica · 20/02/2022 17:33

'about to boom'

lol

Alwayswonderedwhy · 20/02/2022 17:38

We've always had a mix of modern and mid century. We've got some gplan and Scandinavian dining chairs amongst other furniture. It definitely doesn't look 'old people' if styled well.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 20/02/2022 17:40

Laughing at the about to boom...I'm nearly 50 and it was fashionable way before I started collecting about 30 years ago.

BillyAndTheSillies · 20/02/2022 17:42

We have lots of Ercol and G Plan. We inherited a dining set and sofa and it grew from there.

We sold the sofa as it was very much style over substance and bloody uncomfortable but everything else is such incredible quality. We have a 30's house and lots and lots of glass and mid century furniture seems to work beautifully in it.

ethelredonagoodday · 20/02/2022 17:44

We have quite a lot of Ercol, and a few other bits from Nathan. It's very nicely made and looks lovely mixed in with more modern furniture. It's sought after i think now, and some pieces got for a lot of money.

Riverlee · 20/02/2022 17:47

We were clearing out in-laws house last year. The man from the house clearance company said he couldn’t get enough of Errol and 79s furniture - it was flying out of the door.

I’m more of a dark wood person (waiting for it to come back into fashion)

AgathaX · 20/02/2022 17:48

It's definitely been back in fashion for a good few years now. I can appreciate that it's better made than lots of modern furniture but the style is not for me. I like old, old antique furniture though.

DuaLeaper · 20/02/2022 17:48

I've always loved it. Just inherited a Windsor sideboard, coffee table, trolley and some chairs from my DPs, to go with the chests of drawers I've bought for myself. I also picked up a lovely Stag bedroom set in a charity shop a while back - beautifully made and pristine, despite being well over sixty years old.

I don't think the new Ercol furniture is half as good - I bought a Cosenza sofa a few years ago and while it looks the part, it's incredibly uncomfortable and the cushions have sagged badly.

earsup · 20/02/2022 18:10

Good quality but I dont like it...prefer victorian etc.

JudgeRindersMinder · 20/02/2022 23:38

I’m well aware it’s been fashionable for a few years now, and till very very recently I’ve turned my nose up at it a bit because it was so popular with my parents’ generation.
I’ve just totally surprised myself in the way I’ve suddenly started to appreciate it

Dark furniture is definitely on the up, particularly vintage pieces

Nomorescreentime · 20/02/2022 23:49

I’ve moved into a house built in the 60s so I’m also starting to appreciate furniture from a similar era as it suits the house! I’ve ended up with a bit of a vintage Pyrex bakeware habit.

Sd352 · 21/02/2022 12:51

MCM has been very popular for at least as long as I have been aware of interiors trends (so at least a decade). It took me a while to dissociate it from my grandparents had in their houses but it has grown on me and I wish my grandparents had kept some of the lovelier pieces!
I am not as keen on MCM sofas but love dining sets, side boards and accent chairs.

grandmashotdoodlebugs · 21/02/2022 14:22

I have my grandmothers Ercol sideboard and pebble coffee tables plus a large coffee table in the loft

Love it!

Mollysocks · 21/02/2022 14:26

I love it but only done on a fresh and clean modern way. Like the photos below. I can’t be doing with avocado green and orange patterned wallpaper or curtains if you know what I mean.

"about to boom"

lol - I looked to see if this post was 10 years old.

It's been back in fashion for years, and is on the way out.

Justkeeppedaling · 21/02/2022 17:01

I'm looking for some g-plan shelving, if anyone has any they don't want!
