Buying a house with the gas/ electric panels outside?

Hello,

I viewed a nice house today. The only problem was that the electric and gas boxes were on the outside of the property.

It looked a bit like this: www.google.com/search?q=gas+electric+box+outside&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiYnpOs6ov2AhUKXMAKHS3EDu4Q_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=2369&bih=1205#imgrc=ag8cbLiIEFbfvM

Would this be a problem if renting the property out? Or with insurance etc?

That's a perfectly normal place to house meters.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 19/02/2022 13:07

I've never lived in a (rented) property where the gas meter is inside. Its never been a problem.

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 19/02/2022 13:07

I'm not sure I understand the question. On the outside wall of the house? Every house I've lived in (I think 8) has had this.

dementedpixie · 19/02/2022 13:08

Perfectly normal where I am for the gas meter at least to be outside within an enclosed box. My electric meter is in the converted garage

CovidCorvid · 19/02/2022 13:09

I would say that’s a positive.

LIZS · 19/02/2022 13:10

Normal, they don't disturb you to read the meters.

Bubblegum22 · 19/02/2022 13:12

Normal where we are

Lazypuppy · 19/02/2022 13:17

Isn't that where they always are? I've never seen them anywhere else

QforCucumber · 19/02/2022 13:18

Bought 2 houses like this, why would it be a problem?

Hellocatshome · 19/02/2022 13:18

Why would it be an issue?

CagneyNYPD1 · 19/02/2022 13:19

Lots of houses on my road have converted their garages and so moved the meters to an outside wall. So very standard.

Summersdreaming · 19/02/2022 13:21

I've only ever known them to be like that or occasionally in the cellar, why is it a problem?

FAQs · 19/02/2022 13:29

?? That’s perfectly normal on many properties.

MaizeAmaze · 19/02/2022 14:03

Totally normal in newer houses. Means they can be read without needing access to the house. And much more convenient to read than having them buried with all the other junk under the stairs, which is where I've had them before.

Absolutly no issue with renting it out or insurance.

FTEngineerM · 19/02/2022 14:05

Nothing can happen to it because it’s outside.. they’re not soluble.

Hugasauras · 19/02/2022 14:06

This is normal, isn't it? Never lived anywhere with an inside gas meter! Our electricity meter is in garage.

Floralnomad · 19/02/2022 14:07

That’s a normal place to put them .

stuntbubbles · 19/02/2022 14:08

Normal and I’ve even lived places where the gas and electricity networks have actively acted to move them outside as ultimately its better to have them there.

PropertyProblems · 19/02/2022 14:10

Op here.

I have never had a house with this before.

The house is inner-city, so there's a small amount of social problems in the area. What's to stop somebody from tampering with the boxes?

What is someone going to do?
Be a naughty little truant and read your meter on the way to the park?

Well, I once bought a house with the electric meter under the stairs. Cost no small amount of time, effort and money to have it moved outside so that it wasn't dangerous.
stuntbubbles · 19/02/2022 14:12

Why would they? I live in a shithole neighbourhood in Lewisham and for all the various crimes and antisocial behaviour, no one’s remotely interested in anyone else’s energy meters.

eurochick · 19/02/2022 14:14

It's normal. Newer houses tend to have these. It is much more convenient than a meter under the stairs.

Why would they? I live in an inner city area with a large amount of social problems. Believe me people have more pressing matters than tampering with your gas and electric meter.

PeakyBlender · 19/02/2022 14:17

I've never known them nor be outside. No one is going to tamper with them. What do you think they could do with it? Grin
