Damaged Fence & Neighbour

Probably a typical post after today's storm!

A tree has fallen in our garden and damaged the fence to the side that is next doors responsibility. Presumably he needs to claim via his insurance? He is saying there's a high chance fencing isn't included on the insurance, which from looking online at our insurance it says fences aren't due to wind although it says you can claim for tree damage, so not sure if that counts.

If he can't claim on the insurance- should we pay even though it is his side? There was nothing wrong with the tree, just unlucky.

If it is feather edge boards that you nail together Wickes sell them, DH has to make up a small fence about 6-7 ft and it didn't look too expensive and DH reckons quite easy to do

I have never claimed on our insurance for a fence. They need maintaining and repairing regularly. It’s part of owning a house and not worth losing your NCB over.

I'd also replace the panels without going through the insurance but if your area is anything like mine then best of luck getting hold of the panels! Out of stock for delivery everywhere nearby.

Wickes have the individual feather edge fence boards in our local store, in fact I have asked DH to measure up and get down there as there will be heavy demand after the storm. He had a grumpy face on as he went outside to measure up

Thanks everyone. We are not going via insurance. We cleared the tree today and have propped the fence up but will get fixed ASAP. Looking at it there's only the main post and a couple of pieces of the feather edge broken so shouldn't be too bad. My husband said the neighbour mentioned re doing the whole fence side, 5 sections worth but we are definitely not doing that when only 2 were even hit by the tree and not all of that was damaged!

I guess if he wants a whole new fence you could offer to pay for one post, two panels and a bit more for goodwill/labour. (If you do this get him to sign a receipt though and put it in with your house documents)
