Was supposed to move tomorrow

Contracts should have been exchanged yesterday and we were due to complete tomorrow. Our buyers solicitor has messed something up and we’ve been told since yesterday that it might not happen. Our solicitor said it was up to us if we wanted to take it to the wire and carry on as planned but she wasn’t hopeful that it could complete. I decided that if it wasn’t sorted and contracts hadn’t exchanged by the end of today then I’d call tomorrow off.

I’m now left with boxes packed, removals booked etc and no move tomorrow.

They are now saying we could try for Tuesday but dh is going in hospital for an operation on Wednesday that will leave him unable to drive / use his arm for 6 weeks as he had an accident last week. We were hoping to get In and sorted out buy an oven, fridge etc while he can still use his arm.

So, moving isn’t feasible for 6 weeks now especially as we are moving into a house that needs a lot of work.

Feel bad that we are the ones now holding it all up for 6 weeks but it wasn’t our mistake.
Worrying that our buyer and our vendor won’t be very understanding.
Would you move house the day before an operation ? Feeling really stressed and unsure 😐

I'd rather move before than after! Could you get the removal company to unpack the major stuff?

3girlsmama · 17/02/2022 20:57

I would go ahead the day before the op. I think it would be more stressful waiting the 6 weeks. You can order fridge & oven etc to be delivered.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 17/02/2022 20:58

I'd move too
Delivered and installed. Or pay someone to do this.

Yes! Go for Tuesday!

Gettingonabitnow · 17/02/2022 20:59

Yes definitely move before the op - delays of 6 weeks at this late stage can cause people to pull out x

aLittleL1fe · 17/02/2022 21:00

Is it feasible to move without your DH's involvement by hiring extra help required? It's going to be much harder but is it possible? Lots of single people move houses alone or with the help of friends & family.

VanCleefArpels · 17/02/2022 21:01

Yes move before because the recovery etc after the operation is inherently uncertain

Summersdreaming · 17/02/2022 21:01

Definitely move the day before!

marqueses · 17/02/2022 21:02

I would to avoid a 6 week delay, you'd just have to muddle through somehow and not worry about stuff until your dh is better

aLittleL1fe · 17/02/2022 21:03

I wouldn't move before the operation because you want to be as fit and rested as possible before an operation, and moving will mean DH will be tired and probably stressed which will make post-op recovery longer.

Starseeking · 17/02/2022 21:10

I'd definitely move before the op, it will be a pain if you don't. Given that a lot of tradesmen are extremely busy at present, you could advertise on your local FB or Nextdoor for a couple of students to help do some of the heavy lifting/act as handypeople once the movers have gone.

Also, pay extra for the packing and moving service. 100% worth it, as reduces your stress immeasurably.

Hope all goes well!

tealandteal · 17/02/2022 21:14

I would move before, your DH couldn’t have planned to do that much in 3 days? Get a fridge and oven delivered and installed.

EmmaC78 · 17/02/2022 23:49

You should go ahead with the move. Friends and family can help.with things your husband can't manage.

Kite22 · 17/02/2022 23:59

Agree with everyone else.
Move. Once you are in you can get things sorted over the time. Friends will help with specific things he can't manage.

Kyrae · 18/02/2022 14:34

If the removal men are moving the boxes so your dh won't get tired out or risk further injury, I'd move before the operation, as operations do quite often get cancelled last minute, and even on the day, especially with so many staff shortages due to covid :(

Heronwatcher · 18/02/2022 19:41

Move and get someone else to help out (pay if necessary) a lot can happen in 6 weeks and there’s a good chance the whole thing could fall apart if you wait that long.

Elasticatedwaist · 19/02/2022 19:29

Thanks for the advice. Contracts have exchanged and we are moving on Monday !
I’m also hobbling around with a hip problem and chronic migraines but we will make it work somehow !
I was really having a panic on Thursday. I think it’s partly because we’re moving from a house that’s all sorted to a doer upper and it’s 12 miles away from family and friends instead of just around the corner .
