Wrong tile pattern??

We are having our ensuite redone and the tiler has made a start today. Having gone in to take a look after he finished for the day he has used a straight grid pattern (see the pic) and not the offset patter I was expecting, as in the link below:

www.porcelainsuperstore.co.uk/products/harmony-stone?variant=39435395891390

Stupid of me not to discuss the tile pattern with him before he started :( I only told him what order to put the rows in. Now I'm not sure whether it looks ok in the grid pattern, or if I should tell him to take them off and start again tomorrow, which will mean I need to order more tiles...

Any opinions on whether the tiles look ok in this pattern or not please?

Wrong tile pattern??

Straight stacked are definitely more modern looking, personally I prefer it.
Hopefully this morning goes well.

This is an interesting article - it give four reasons who straight is "better" than brickbond.

I like the way he’s done it. It looks more modern. Disclaimer we have brick set metro tiles all white, just done and probably already dated!

turandotty · 17/02/2022 07:09

Read that link op - the straight pattern is more contemporary and better for practical reasons too. I think it looks great the way he's done it.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/02/2022 07:51

Straight is more fashionable — but it doesn’t suit every style of tile, IMO. In magazines and showrooms you mostly see it on plain tiles - often those slim, matt ones.

BemusedBrenda · 17/02/2022 08:14

I'm still totally conflicted, and he is going to be here in 15 minutes! I think as pp have said, to my mind the straight set works for the plain tiles but I'm not sure if I will like the effect with so many patterned ones in the middle of the set.

My OH has oh so helpfully said it's up to me, whatever I prefer is fine.... But I have just spotted the new loo is leaking!! So I guess it will have to come off whatever happens now.

As pp have said the grid pattern is very much on trend at the moment. You could google/Pinterest examples to give you a better idea of how it will look finished?
I personally think it looks ok, even with the patterned ones in the middle. That said, it's your bathroom and if you don't like it, you don't like it.

throughtheair · 17/02/2022 08:24

Brick bond is pretty dated now. I'd leave them, looks far more contemporary.

GeneLovesJezebel · 17/02/2022 08:26

It doesn’t look right to me.

OlafLovesAnna · 17/02/2022 08:31

I really like it and agree that it looks more modern. We are currently having a tile dilemma so I have looked at a hell of a lot of them recently!

Netaporter · 17/02/2022 08:32

I think other posters are right about the grid pattern being back in, but it does really require more blocked Colours on the tiles. If you showed him the pattern offset in the website and asked for that, you are within your rights to ask him to change it at no cost. If you didn’t, then I’d be expecting to have to pay for them to be refitted. You also need to allow for breakages for removal…Do you have an access panel for the loo? A flush panel or maybe a section that you intend to silicone in? Good luck, you need to be able to live with it, so as you say, Big Girl pants on time!

User72614643 · 17/02/2022 08:35

Looks like he's just done it for ease so he doesn't have to make cuts and just line them all up. I would be ripping them off.

Totalwasteofpaper · 17/02/2022 08:45

Lovely tiles but get them to redo in brick layout.

This is why I spy on trasedmen am really friendly and make builders eleventy billion cups of tea.
I once walked in on one trying to install a power point at WAIST height because “he’d run out of cable and the TV was probably going there”
His mind was blown when I said “what if I want to put the tv somewhere else?”
Confused

A final update in case anyone is interested - after laying out 4 different layouts of tiles on the bedroom floor and taking all the feedback into consideration, we've decided to stick with the straight set. Our ensuite is pretty dinky and the tiles are going 1.2m high all the way round so in the end we decided the straight set gives a more clean and less busy look, and it is quite nice with the grey grout (apologies to my mum who violently objects to the straight set layout).

Thanks everyone for chipping in! Fingers crossed for no more disasters!

Glad you’ve got to a decision, OP. Post a pic of tile loveliness when it’s finished!

I think in new-builds all power sockets are waist-height for accessibility reasons (i.e so wheelchair users can use them and people like me who are 40 but have the joints of an 80 year old and can't bend over easily).

Just had the exact same situation 😂😂😂
