Move 3 doors down from a primary school?

Hiya, I thought I'll ask Mumsnet.

We found a house we like & it turns out the house is 3 doors down from a primary school which means we would never be late Grin It's only about a 20 minute walk from where we live now but much bigger and has an extra bedroom.

None of my kids are at school yet and Ibe never done a drop off, or pick up so:

Would this be a deal breaker for you? Is it too noisy? It it too busy in the morning? Anything else that would make you think don't move there?

We like the school as it's one of the ones that would have been on the list anyway for the kids.

One of us is always home in the week as we're wfh and one does 2 days, the other 3 days.

Would be nice to hear your thoughts.

I would think of it as a positive. Nice short walk to school and if you live in London you likely won’t be driving to work so a bit of increased traffic at 9 and 3 is unlikely to be a problem. Personally I think there is no lovelier noise that primary school children playing. And break time isn’t that much or their day anyway it won’t be constant. If it’s a good school it’s likely to increase value being so close I would think?

I used to live near a big secondary. Never again. The parking, driving situation was ridiculous

Lots schools have summer schemes every holiday so don’t assume it be quiet. They do spend a lot of time outside

I live opposite a school. It is busy for 30min in the morning and again in the afternoon but otherwise it's fab! It's so quiet and bonus is no school run!

I would never ever live near a school again.

With our previous house there was a school at the bottom of our road. For those that say 'but you knew the school was there' - yes, our daughter was 6 months old when we bought so we saw it as a massive positive. Plus we had our own drive and I was so certain that no one would park over it. How naive was I!!!

Firstly, we ended up putting our daughter into a different school so we didn't benefit from the position (this was obviously our decision and nothing to do with living near the school or not!) but during Covid times when I was on furlough I was doing school pick up at 3pm and honestly, when I got back to my road I could NEVER park on my own driveway. And there were no other spaces of course. I politely asked parents to move and they were incredibly rude!!! ' There's no other spaces' I heard a lot. I didn't give a shit actually! And those that say 'it's only for 5 mins'. Yeah - but when you go, someone else parks there and then someone else..... plus the cars start parking up from 2pm onwards to guarantee a space. So bloody annoying.

Parents evening - absolute hell. School fetes on Saturdays - absolute hell. Plus various clubs hired the school fields/halls at the weekends so a constant stream of cars blocking the drive, even on a Saturday. Learnt my lesson and will never buy near a school again.

School noise - this was the only good thing! I loved hearing happy children play outside on a spring/summer day! Made me smile. Until their bastard parents showed up at 2pm and blocked my drive.

I live about 50m from a primary school, my DC attend(ed) and it's a massive plus to be so near the school whilst the kids are there.

Am in London too and don't have a car so the parking situation - which as others have said is only at 9 and 3.30 anyway - doesn't bother me. There are a PITA minority of parents who insist on driving and who park/drive badly, which I know annoys some of my neighbours, but it's not a massive problem.

Like others I love hearing the kids playing as well. It really wouldn't put me off buying the right house.

I live less than a minute from the Primary DD2 went too. Very convenient in the morning with disorganised DD! I work from home so didn’t have to take much time out for drop offs.

Yes there is a bit of noise at playtime but it’s no big deal and when DD was there, if I was outside at playtime I sometimes thought I could make out her yelling in the playground which I liked!

The morning/afternoon troop past is about a 15 minute period each day - I barely notice it. DD was very happy at Primary so if anything it makes me a bit nostalgic.

Deal breaker for me. I lived by a school , the parking situation was horrible

SD25 · 16/02/2022 22:04

Live opposite a primary school and the parking is excellent! Because there are no houses there we can always park. As others have said, it's a little busy briefly twice a day otherwise makes for a quiet road in evening, weekends and holidays. Bonus! But this is a small primary. Not sure I'd live by a secondary or larger school.

We live opposite a primary school - didn't even register as an issue. You hear the kids playing but it's a lovely, happy sound!

Just check and see if it's used out if hours too
