Something in loft keeping me awake

It's driving me mad!!!!!
Always I'm the same corner, like a tapping and scratching noise.
Same time every night, starts about 10ish, but last few nights has been through the night.
No dropping of any kind in the loft and cardboard boxes have no evidence of been chewed.
Do sometimes find empty birds eggs in the garden at certain times of year.
What's this likely to be and how do I make it stop?

Squirrels? Get pest control in to see where it’s coming from.

ofwarren · 15/02/2022 03:19

What colour are the birds eggs?
We have starlings in our roof who make a similar noise

xXwhenwillitendXx · 15/02/2022 03:25

Thay are blue with browny black specks on them

We have squirrels in our loft periodically. We got one of those high frequency rodent repellent things which works!

Henlie · 15/02/2022 05:25

It could be squirrels or mice…. But most likely squirrels. Get pest control in to come and take a look.

ofwarren · 15/02/2022 08:31

The eggs sound like starling eggs. I reckon you have starlings like we do. We have a pair that nest every year and they are quite active at the moment.

PragmaticWench · 15/02/2022 08:38

Are there gaps in your soffits where birds could get in to nest? If you want to retain airflow into the loft space you can have wire mesh stapled over any gaps.

xXwhenwillitendXx · 15/02/2022 08:40

I had a feeling it was birds bit I stupidly thought they slept at night Blush.
Will they do any harm or damage?? If they won't I think I'm happy to let them stay.

Squirrels, mice, rats, bats, or birds.

When we've had birds we have also heard fluttering and chirping, even before the nest hatched so it was obviously birds. If it is birds, when the nest hatches you will know all about it as they are very noisy!

BammBamm · 15/02/2022 10:52

They did damage at our old house, we had a big damp patch in the bathroom where their nest was.

ofwarren · 15/02/2022 13:31

Depends where there nest is.
If it is birds, pest control can't kill them but can put mesh once the babies have fledged.

Get a motion sensor trail wildlife cam! :) You can put it in the loft and point it at the noisy area it'll record video of anything that moves in front of it, that should solve the mystery :) Can get em for around £50 on Amazon and they're good for watching night wildlife in the garden too, hedgehogs etc!

xXwhenwillitendXx · 15/02/2022 19:22

@Kyrae that would be amazing as we back onto open fields with a lot of wildlife

They're fantastic fun! Didn't even realise we had foxes visiting the garden until i got the trail cam! I take it on holiday to Scotland too and have even seen pine martens on it! Hope it solves your mystery :)

They have started again already Angry, I'm in for a long night. The noise never moves from the one corner.

It probably is squirrels and not a dodgy bald man like that one (who had been living in her loft).

xXwhenwillitendXx · 15/02/2022 21:15

Defo not a bald man. I go in the loft quite alot to put things in / take things out of there and no man's jumped on me yet Grin

I had tapping noise every night on and off.my husband looked up on loft and nothing. The noise continued I then read article about very small insects that are black and tap loud in damp conditions. ( our room has alot of condensation). It turned out there was loads on a wooden picture frame up on the wall. I removed picture and noise went that night.

If you live anywhere near me (west coast of Canada) I would be betting on raccoons. They start nesting soon. We have spent thousands to get rid of them humanely. One had kits under our front porch and would tear the siding off the house to get to them. The exterminator finally put the kits in a bucket, set them in the garden, and the Mom took them one by one.

I'm putting my bet on squirrels for you. Not so nasty and persistent!
