Tax evasion on rental income

Hello,

I found out my ex has been cheating on tax system. He has been receiving rental income since 2005 but has never reported it with HMRC. He received the rental income with 3 different bank accounts under third party's names. I have the evidence of the bank statement as he was using my sister's bank account without letting her know. We were furious when we found out. He stole her bank account and has been using it for many years. My sister thought that the bank account was closed by him many years ago as he was working at the bank branch at that time and he promised her to close it for her but actually he stole the bank account and has been using it in order to avoid tax.
Does anyone know if I report the tax evasion with HMRC, how likely they will investigate him? Some people say that only the large amount of the tax evasion will be investigated as they are short staffed and it is not cost efficient to look into the smaller cases. The house is 3 bedroom house in London and he has been having 3 different sets of tenants all the time. Separately, we will report to Action Fraud but again does anyone know how likely they will investigate this case?

That actually sounds like a police matter as well as an Inland Revenue matter. He was working at the bank and stole your sisters account and had access to 2 other accounts in different names? Thats serious, maybe even prison worthy.

How did you find all this out?

Fraud costs us UK taxpayers nearly £138 billion, yes billion a year. Without this level of fraud, the honest amongst us would’ve paying a lot less tax and National Insurance.

It is not right or fair. No matter how small, it all adds up.

It’s your husband so I’m not sure how brave you are to inform HMRC. I don’t know if they will investigate. I hope they do look into these things otherwise there would be zero deterrence.

No advice OP but WoW.....how did you find out?

There's a special page somewhere on HMRC where you can report and give the person's name and details of the bank account in question etc. I think you need to report it to the bank where he works and other banks.

I would contact the bank regards the stealing of accounts, it may be they involve the police but they will certainly take it very seriously. You can contact HMRC regards the tax although it might be several years if at all they investigate as they honestly are crumbling under their work load and lack of staff at the moment.

He is soon to be ex. Divorce process has been almost finalised. I found my sister's bank card in his wallet (did not sneak, I just saw it and challenged him). He admitted he has been using it. My sister called the bank and she just recently found out the bank account was still active and there were transactions of receiving these rental income and he took out the cash from ATM. My sister can justify it is not her transactions as she is living 250km away from us and was not possible to use the cash machine. The property was solely owned my ex. No involvement from me with the property management either. She is living with benefit for reason. She is worried she might be looked like benefit fraud as this could be seen as like her income. I cannot stand if this was missed by police as well as HMRC so I wanted to know how likely they will act...
