Shortlist of places to move to from London

We're thinking about leaving London. It's a hard decision but even with our very good salaries, we're getting priced out of the areas we would want to live in.

Some of the places we've identified as potential destinations include:
Bath
Horsham
Hove
Winchester

Budget up to £1m but if we're buying outside London would prefer to keep it under £800k. Ideally 4-bed with good sized garden.

Our criteria:
Good co-ed, non-religious state secondary school options.
The timing is awful because DS will be starting Y7 in September so we might be relying on in-year places, which could be risky. So we would probably want a place with a few good schools so there's a chance one of them will have space. Or am I looking at this through the jaded London lens of oversubscribed schools? Are schools in these areas also likely to be full?

A proper town where we can easily walk to everything. We're willing to get a car, but we can't do a cookie-cutter surburban development on the outskirts of a town. That's just a personal choice, not a judgement btw.

Good transport links. We don't need to be in London regularly for work, but will need (and want) to go in occasionally.

Progressively minded, diverse area.

We are planning some weekend trips to explore these areas further and hopefully look at properties but I would appreciate any thoughts / insight in advance. Thank you!

You will be wanting any of the non blue bits in the attached image for the progressive and diverse whish. Since their aren't many it shouldn't take too long to decide.

Hove is nice but the gardens in that budget are small. Plus prices have shot up there recently.

I personally wouldn't want to live in Bath, much preferred Bristol as it seemed much less stuffy than Bath.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 14/02/2022 12:11

Bath is nice enough, though lots of tourists, maybe take a look at Keynsham (near Bath but your money will go further). Also, a bit further south so may not be of interest, but a nice town in Somerset that has all you are asking is Wellington. I wasn't a fan of Winchester when I went there.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 14/02/2022 12:12

Do you need to be in the south east? (I know Bath is south west)

Personally I'd be looking at Didsbury or Charlton (south Manchester), or maybe Edinburgh. Possibly York. But that might be too far away from London for your circs

MinnieMountain · 14/02/2022 12:44

Keynsham is nice. A friend moved there and likes it. Seems liberal, 10 minutes by train to Bristol TM or to Bath.

I don’t know about secondary schools though.

Ribenery · 14/02/2022 12:46

what is occasionally in London - is it twice a week or once a month (say)

that has a big bearing on how far away you can go

TheEconomista · 14/02/2022 14:44

I'm always interested that when a poster says 'progressively minded/diverse', the responses will then be that you have to totally avoid every Tory seat in the country. We live in Tory heartland and I can tell you that very few of the people I know support or would ever vote for them. It's a huge area with some very diverse towns and some very wealthy/not diverse pockets, and even within those there are certainly progressive minded people doing interesting things. I wouldn't be too dismissive...

Earlymorningcuppa · 14/02/2022 16:08

Have a look at Norwich - the wedge between Dereham road and Newmarket Road - good transport links to London, lovely community, not sure about schools - you’ll need to look at that.

EmmaH2022 · 14/02/2022 16:10

I'm just interested to know what "progressive/diverse" means.

Hoolihan · 14/02/2022 16:16

Hove is fab. Everything on your list plus the sea!

HewasH2O · 14/02/2022 16:24

Winchester is not progressive or diverse. A sample of deadlines from today's Ham0shire Chronicle:

Man sentenced after stealing detergent 8 years on.

Student...talks about life in Winchester in an electric wheelchair - I couldn't even get through the front door.

College students frpm Winchester take part in farmland bird count (accompanied by a photo of white teenagers).

Recreate the red Baywatch swimsuit from Pam & Tommy - where to buy.

😂 But what headlines would you see in a progressive or diverse area/paper?
MrsMoastyToasty · 14/02/2022 16:38

Bristol is more diverse than Bath. IMHO. Both cities have areas that would get you a property for your budget (as well as places that are out of budget!). If you want less built up areas then Keynsham is midway between the two and has rail links to London, plus buses to both cities and Bristol Airport.

Nessnext · 14/02/2022 16:44

Norwich
Hove

Not Bath or Winchester. Not at all progressive.

SD25 · 14/02/2022 17:25

Just because an area voted Conservative doesn't mean it isn't diverse... lots of places the vote would be close, so there will be a split of people! Also, not all Tories are complete scum! (I've never voted Tory but still...)

Bimblybomeyelash · 14/02/2022 17:27

£800k gets you depressing little in Bath. Have you thought about Exeter?

Ohwhere2021 · 14/02/2022 18:22

800k won’t get you much in Winch and presuming Bath as well.
If you want proper diverse and progressive would look towards Hove.

FurierTransform · 14/02/2022 18:41

What does progressively minded/diverse even mean - specifically what criteria should an area possess in order to meet this strange definition?

I mean I'd describe the entire UK as progressive/diverse when compared to pretty much any other country.

NadjaofAntipaxos · 14/02/2022 19:06

West bridgford in Nottingham. Excellent state schools, lovely properties. Great High Street with indie bars and cafes. Just outside the city centre with the genuine diversity that brings. Big university presence. Walking distance or short taxi to the station with train journey to St Pancras 1 hour 45 mins. It's not the South though Grin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/02/2022 19:11

I live in quite a rich neighbourhood (I’m not wealthy) it has a high number of graduates ( biggest in U.K. outside London l think) and a Labour Mp. I’ve seen proper massive houses with vote Labour signs.

Very progressive and lots of diversity. These places do exist.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/02/2022 19:16

Doesn’t progressive mean looking forward? I’m thinking of the Progressive Alliance which has been suggested to beat the Conservatives. Made of Labour, Lib Dens, SNP and Greens.

Diverse means lots of different sorts of people.

catfunk · 14/02/2022 19:23

Look at hove between hove street and boundary road. Huge houses and bigger gardens. Not really walking distance to town though but easy bus ride and lots of amenities. Most other residential areas in hove (Poets corner) have smaller gardens.

EmmaH2022 · 14/02/2022 19:29

Diverse means lots of different sorts of people.

Could you expand on that?

And surely all you can see is the inside of the co-op? Or are you putting your arse on show outside?

Does an old fashioned moonie have a place in a progressive society? 😂

(Seriously, excellent username, memories of a drunken evening?)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/02/2022 19:36

Ha ha! No it’s a saying ‘I’ll show my arse in the Co op window’

Progressive and Diverse as defined by dictionary attached.
