Overcharged for roof repairs?

Hi all, we have a bay window on our old house (built 1905) which has been leaking on and off for a couple of years now! We’ve had roofers out who have repaired the lead flashings but after the really bad weather last weekend this got worse again and had been dropping through! I’ll attach a photo of the damage.

We got someone out today who said it was a mess and has fitted down the lead, painted it all with lead sealant and replaced some felt to totally fix (hopefully) the issue!

However, the original job was quoted at £280 and then they said they could fix it all for the total of £900, with a 3 year guarantee. It’s been such a headache for so long and I just want it properly fixed that I agreed, but now I think I’ve been totally overcharged but I also don’t know how much these things should cost! A different person mentioned redoing the entire roof which was going to be upwards of £2k so who knows!

The bay roof is your standard size, maybe 3 metres long and 2 high...what do people think?

Seems a lot but with a 3 year warranty, it's worth it. You can call him out if it goes wrong until its fixed and then it's done for good.

Could you ask for a breakdown of cost showing materials and labour? Should give you a bit more to go on.

I would want all the felt replaced not some for that price. The thing is you agreed to the price and the work so there's not a lot you can do now.

If you’re talking about completely replacing the lead on a bay then £900 is about right.

Hi all!

They didn’t replace the lead, just sealed and pointed it and then painted over it with the waterproof paint.

Also as it happens it wasn’t fixed at all and we’ve had a terrible leak in the storms, they came back out and made a bit of a mess with some more sealant and then quoted us another £200 to clear our gutters (something we have had done for free my our previous roofer as a goodwill gesture since)

I can’t help but think we’ve been conned but I suppose we just need to let it go as we can’t get any money back now and I don’t feel comfortable getting him round again...

Post a picture of the outside. Is the bay window roof made completely of lead? Generally painting lead is only decorative as lead is impervious to water.
