Removals Costs on Average

Hi, I was hoping to get some insight into moving costs before I call any companies for quotes.

We will be moving from a 3 bed house (2 double, 1 box room), and it will be around 20 miles to the new home.

West Midland based and we're weighing up pricing options for;

Van hire
Removals team
Removals team including packing

Any thoughts or past experience welcome 😊

Hi,

We just paid £1700 for a move with packing (including dismantling and reassembling some furniture) for a similar sized move but 200 miles so maybe not that comparable!

Our highest quote was £5500, then we had 2 at £2000. The packing is the best money ever spent though, makes it so much less stressful!

@Namechangedone thanks for replying. That seems much much higher than expected so we may end up going down the van hire route if that's the case 😳 😂

We paid similar, for a long distance move but without packing, it was just before the end of the stamp duty craziness which pushed prices up

It might be loads cheaper as it’s a much shorter journey! We were reimbursed as we are moving for work, I probably wouldn’t have paid that if I had to foot the bill Grin

Moved twice in the last 5-months (second time yesterday!). Used local removal companies both times, NO WAY would we have considered doing it ourselves as we have a lot of stuff including a small garage workshop tools & equipment.
Did our own packing so no boxes or materials included (just protecting furniture, mattress etc). The second time we had slightly more stuff (including quite a lot of garden pots & plants).

First. 50-mile move, 4-guys, 7.5T lorry & large Luton type van, £1.2K.
Second. 20-mile move, 6-guys, 2x7.5T lorry, £1.1K.
Both times they started at 8am and were done by 2pm.

Thanks for the replies @floofycroissant and @Dougieowner.

When they quoted did they take into account the amount of furniture you had to move?

I may be better off just getting some quotes I guess lol 😅

We paid £1800, a year ago today! But our move was 3 hours away.

They do a survey before quoting. Half the companies we contacted wanted to do video surveys but due to the amount of stuff in outbuildings & garden I wasn't keen on this and only got quotes from companies who would carry out a physical survey.

£1500 for a similar size flat, moving and packing. One guy packed most of stuff the day before completion, then 4 guys finished packing and moved us on the day. (2 miles away) . In the new house they reassembled the furniture and put the boxes in relevant rooms, but we unpacked them ourselves. I'd totally recommend this service !!

Wow!!!!

In the summer, at the height of stamp duty holiday craziness, DM was quoted £4k-£10k for a slightly larger house and a slightly longer move.

Summersdreaming · 12/02/2022 10:17

I've never paid for removals, but I've always done local moves and done van runs myself. I don't like the idea of movers packing and unpacking for me, I'm too much of a control freak Grin.

Van hire is about £350 per week here, less per day but not much difference.

ThorFull · 13/02/2022 13:32

I’ve just paid £1800 in West Midlands 3 bedrooms, shed full. I’m packing up- got some boxes from them, some passed on from someone on Facebook . They’re loading the van tomorrow. Storing it all overnight. Then driving it 100 miles away and unloading the next day. Dismantling and rebuilding 3 beds.

I had a quote for £1200 but decided to go with the guys who will take more time and care- bad weather, short daylight hours and I’m doing it all on my own.

ThorFull · 13/02/2022 13:34

Should add that I’m already physically wrecked and emotionally drained by this move. The thought of loading boxes and furniture into a van now, fills me with dread. I’d pay twice as much.
Wish I’d gone for packing service too.

Hiya. We moved last summer and got a variety of quotes. I'm also from the West Mids.

From: 2 bed end terrace
To: 4 bed detached

2 adults & 2 children.

What we needed:

  1. Put all of our boxes in a van (we packed ourselves)
  2. Disassemble a bunk bed and put it in the van
  3. Move 2 miles up the road
  4. Unload all the stuff into our new house

The quotes:

  1. Large national removal firm (Brittania) - £3,000
  2. Local removals firm 1 - £1,500
  3. Local removals firm 2 - £900 (if you quoted a leaflet to get 10% off)
  4. Two men and a van - £300 (plus I told my home insurance and had "home move" added to my insurance for that month at a cost of zero because we just took our home insurance with us)

I opted for option 4. The guys were amazing. If you're in the Worcestershire area, I can give you their details.

FYI. If your home is up on Rightmove, you'll soon start getting lots of leaflets through the door for home movers, with money off.

Good luck with your move!xxx

Obviously we had furniture too. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Lots of furniture. Sofas, beds, general stuff. It took 2 van loads and 4 hours.
