Wooden shutters for front bay window

The quote we just received from someone who has made shutters for a few friends was £1200 for shutters to the top of the window and £700 for cafe style - which is more than half the window height.
Most people on our road have them all the way to the top, if they have them.
The houses across the road cant see into the room if they are cafe style though.
We may put a sofa bed in the front room for visitors and DH reckons could then put temporary blackout blinds there then- just on the top exposed part.
Has anyone had cafe style shutters and regretted it?
It's such a big difference in price.

We have full height shutters. We can have the top half louvres poisoned differently to bottom half. Also, we have a different 'split' in the bathroom as the opener is less than half of the full window height. Our shutters have the internal rod so move one an date rest move as well without the rod being on show.

We did look at cafe shutters but preferred the whole coverage. Also, makes it easier when the sun shines in to have some louvres at the top shut that doesn't block all the sunlight.

Can the opposite neighbours not see in from their first floor? I can watch the tv in the house over the road when they’ve got their cafe style shutters closed.

We’ve got cafe style with curtains. I thought the living room would look pretty bare without curtains.

I can't even see the opposite neighbours' windows from this front room if they go up to cafe style height. I tested it out with the curtains hoiked up like that

For me it would depend on the height of the window. For fall windows they are great at cafe height. If you bay is not tall, they could look at bit odd. My in-laws had a wide squat bay. It’s expensive to get curtains as well. I see lots of cafe style ones in London where people have short front gardens.

Look on Houzz for similar windiest to yours so you can see what they might look like.

Be aware how much light you will lose having them. We had shutters in massive 2m high bay windows at front of house that were there when we moved in. We got the windows replaced and the shutters would no longer fit so decided to get rid and so glad I did, the room is so much lighter and calmer. I wouldn’t ever have shutters again. Pain to clean too, and I think they are getting a bit dated now and everyone has them.

I have cafe-style shutters in my Victorian bay and I love them. White with plain white roller blinds on the top half of the window which I rarely put down. They are smart and I like that I don't feel 'closed in' yet can still have privacy. Because the shutters are only on the bottom half of the window it doesn't stop the sun from flooding in either so my room stays lovely and light. Haven't regretted my decision at all. You could always add top ones at a later date if you decided you wanted them. The man who fitted mine said that some people choose to do this.

MarineBlue33 · 09/02/2022 18:43

That's a good idea All to add them later.

I have half height shutters by choice, I don’t like blocking out the whole view. Half height gives privacy but also light and view of the sky.

Bluepop09 · 09/02/2022 18:47

Hmm we have cafe style and I wish I'd got full. It looks fine during the day but just looks weird on a night.

MarineBlue33 · 16/02/2022 00:50

Yeah I think if I get cafe style, I will be really deep down wanting full height. Hmm

We had cafe style in our old house and I loved them. It lays so much more light in, and if you have a sash window there is a natural break in the middle. MiL got full height ones recently and I don’t like them at all as she also painted the room white
and now it feels really stark

We have full height shutters throughout the house. Worth every penny IMO. Some people in the area have cafe-style, but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice on the style of house IMO.

Another thing to consider is how much heat cafe-style would let out of the windows on a cold day. You'd probably still need curtains too, which is extra money & defeats the object of having the look of shutters inside your home. Our shutters keep the heat in lovely & save on our energy bills.

MarineBlue33 · 22/02/2022 21:53

Mmmm....it may well be full height then
Anyone have those tilt rods too? For opening
It's cheaper with them but wondering how they effect the overall look 🤔
