Heating. Who is correct please?

Please bear with me. I may not be using the correct terminology.

We have an oil fired rayburn.

I think I am correct in saying that we use less oil when the dial is at 60 instead of 80.
DH disagrees. He says the oil use is the same on either. It is how high or low the radiators are at, which makes the difference.

Who is correct please?

Apologies if this subject has been done before. Happy to be pointed to old threads. Thank you.

I appreciate that the settings on the radiators matter too.

Well I think that the thermostatic valves on the radiators control the temperature in the room. The amount of energy needed to get to / maintain a given temperature in the room is pretty fixed, so if you have a lower water temperature circulating then the radiators will be on for longer to get to a given temperature. The only reason the oil usage would be less at a lower temperature is that the Rayburn itself might be more efficient at higher operating temperatures…I don’t know. You’ll almost certainly loose more heat through the pipe work at higher temperatures, but since that also warms the house a bit I can’t imagine it’ll. are any difference. If you want to reduce the cost of heating, I’d lower the temperature on the thermostatic radiator valves, or the main heating thermostat if you have one

Spoken to husband who sorts out our oil boiler. He said that to maintain the higher temperature of the radiators you will have to burn more oil. So it appears you are rightWink

Will show this to DH, as embarassingly, I dont understand the answers.
