I’m not sure if this is mould in the sealant, it won’t scrape off and looks grim. Anyone have any tips??

Yes it's mould.

It happens if the tile isn't properly cleaned and slightly damp before the sealant was applied or if it was applied ineffectively and moisture can get it.

To fix it you'll need to remove the sealant and clean with mould spray, let it dry and then re-seal.

Either remove and re seal if its failed and not doing its job. Or soak in bleach and cover with tissue and leave it for a few hours it will come completely off.

Llamasally · 06/02/2022 21:22

Oh bum. To remove it, do you just peel/chip at/pull it off??

I’ve topped up the white putty stuff round a bath before successfully but not done this 🙈

This works well -

Get the sealant remover. It’s a life changer. It doesn’t matter how well you dry and seal you will still have to replace every few years. I’ve discovered the right equipment makes all of the difference.

Sewaccidentprone · 06/02/2022 21:33

As long as you do it carefully I recommend just using a blade from a Stanley knife.

You just keep the blade parallel to the surface, slide it down and cut through it. Obv mind your fingers and the surfaces and ensure the surface is dry so it doesn’t slip. Reapply mould resist sealant then smooth down with your finger dipped in washing up liquid. Leave for at least 24hrs to cure

Buy sealant remover. Otherwise it can be a bugger to get it all off.

It's not a difficult job to re-seal - loads of videos on YouTube.

I'm not great at DIY but I've done this a few times without any issues.

Main thing is cleaning it really well with the mould cleaner or you'll just be back to square one in a few months.

HG spray it is miraculous

I cleaned mould on bath sealant by putting a line of bleach along it - then use bits of cotton wool to “hold” the bleach in place overnight. Removed it in the morning and it was white!

That's mould on the sealant though.

From the pictures, the OP has mould under the sealant and no amount of bleach or mould cleaner is going to touch it.

She's got to get rid of the sealant first.

Elderflower2016 · 06/02/2022 21:59

Ah ok that makes sense. Haven’t got my glasses on.

TheCanyon · 06/02/2022 22:03

Just soak cotton wool in bleach and leave for a while. Works everytime.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2022 16:23

I would try removing as much of the sealer as you can with a Stanley knife and then I believe WD-40 will remove the remaining silicone sealer.

JadeSeahorse · 08/02/2022 18:54

Before going to the hassle of removing, I would definitely try HG Mould Remover spray which really does work miracles!

Wingedharpy · 08/02/2022 19:03

I'm with @BreadInCaptivity.
Looks to me like someone has applied sealant over the top of a manky, mouldy bit without cleaning manky stuff out.
Screwfix no-nonsense sealant remover helps with getting old stuff off.
Tedious job but well worth the effort.

Gherkingreen · 08/02/2022 19:30

I saw a trick on an ep of the Stacey Solomon show to get rid of mould in sealant, I was v cynical and couldn't believe it actually worked.
Super simple - put a line of neat bleach on the mouldy bit, cover in cotton wool, and leave overnight. The manky mould disappears! Complete game changer.
