Sevenoaks (Kent) villages are lovely, but is it a norm to have absolutely no street lighting in rural / semi-rural areas?

I think so! We have no lighting in ours.

Daisydoesnt · 06/02/2022 16:16

It’s is normal in rural Somerset! Is there a problem with it? It makes it lovely and dark at night so great for star gazing in the evening, and then for a good nights sleep!

FourFourthsDontCare · 06/02/2022 16:20

It’s normal where I am (Hants).

Whatthechicken · 06/02/2022 16:49

Normal in semi-rural/rural areas, I love it. I thought I would hate it, but I actually feel safer than in a city. The stars on a clear night are amazing -download a star app so you know what’s what and I regularly see meteors. Just remember a head torch or have a good phone torch after a night out or on a dog walk - sometimes I can’t see my feet!

There is no problem with it, but it’s a bit of a shocker for us city life people !
I’ve never lived anywhere without street lighting my entire life! Not even on holidays! Lol.

Your post made me laugh. Nope no streetlights or pavements. I'm not on main drains either (village near Sevenoaks). Grin

We live semi-rural in East Sussex and have no street lights on our road (or pavements). I’m guessing it’s the same in similar places.

You do get used to it though.

Scarby9 · 06/02/2022 17:40

My aunt (city born and bred) never got over how dark it was at her daughter's semi-rural home.
See also her shock at mud on carrots at the farmer's market...

A very kind friend lent dh and I her rural French house for our honeymoon.

We had never known darkness like it.

One night we walked to the local bar at dusk. We broke into a jog on the way home and ended up running like a right pair of idiots.

Meadowblossom · 06/02/2022 23:18

Yes. I find street lights weird and a waste/shame.

bloodywhitecat · 06/02/2022 23:23

No street lights, not many pavements, no mains sewerage, no mains gas; village in Suffolk. No street lights is the norm in lots of villages.

twosticksandanapple · 07/02/2022 07:33

Yes normal in the village where I live. We had some neighbours move to our village from London and complain about the lack of street lighting and push for some to be put in. It didn't happen as all the residents liked it dark so they have moved back to London.

AtillatheHun · 07/02/2022 07:42

Yes! It’s what characterises the area as semi rural and is highly prized. The lack of light pollution is wonderful for bird life and star gazing. Buy a head torch.

AtillatheHun · 07/02/2022 07:44

@twosticksandanapple we get that too! Normally a terribly important banker or similar who leans hard on the patronising (& totally fails to appreciate that the people on the parish council who deal with the requests / complaints have had equally notable careers and are not idiot bumpkins and are able to put them back in their box)

jaundicedoutlook · 07/02/2022 09:41

Hadn't noticed that around 7oaks - most of the villages round Tunbridge Wells have lighting on at least until around 11ish. I expect once you get properly out into the sticks or in the very small villages they might not have them, but the likes of Bidborough, Speldhurst etc all have lighting...
