feeling sad about how hard it is to move

DH and I will both be retired by the end of the year. We live in a 4 bed, house, new build but not estate constructed in 1996. It is a really nice house with lots of space, 2 x ensuite, big double garage, recently renovated kitchen family room at the back. We have a study and a room we use for yoga practice. Nice but compact south facing garden too. Our village in the south west is not a particularly posh one but perfectly nice.
We would like to move this year to somewhere there is more going on, ideally with some live music, cinema, independent shops etc. we want to be able to walk to go out, not have to drive half an hour or more in the dark.
Our house is not particularly valuable, maybe 450k, 475 top. In our local "nice town" there is little for sale and an influx of Londoners has
really pushed up prices, there is a 2 bed terrace there in need of modernisation for 400k. our second choice is up north, only 3 places for sale on rightmove altogether, usually there are 20+. Yesterday I thought I had hit the jackpot with a new development of rather stylish houses on an old industrial site not too far away from us. They are rather small but attractive. I called to enquire about when there would be a show house, as they are not scheduled to be built until the end of this year beginning of next. I was told it was unlikely I would get one as there were over 80 enquiries a day and that three plots were reserved by people who had already sold but were prepared to wait a year or more. Oh, and the prices were not set yet and might go up from the around 500k suggestion, indeed the semis being build later might cost more than the detached that are being built first.
The market just seems to be impossible. Even if we were to sell now and wait in rented there is hardly any of that around, and we wouldn't get the benefit of any increases on our house. Sadly I'm starting to think the simple idea of moving somewhere more fun to be is just not going to be possible.

It sounds like you live somewhere lovely

The things you want - live music, cinema - how often do you think you will do those? Even if it's a couple of nights a week, moving home is such a tough thing even in previous times, I would never think of it as a simple thing to do...unless you have the cash to buy outright?

I'm very lucky that family loaned me money to avoid buying and selling simultaneously but it's still a tough prospect and I'm trying not to panic about being unable to sell.

ExConstance · 02/02/2022 16:13

Yes, it might be a bit of a fantasy and we have a nice enough house now, it seems rather boring and safe to carry on living there though I could do a lot to our existing house with what it would cost to move, stamp duty etc. The new houses selling out were in Frome, which I love.

Oh I would love to visit Frome...at which point I'd probably want to move there!

CorsicaDreaming · 02/02/2022 20:52

Moving house is hugely expensive and your own home sounds lovely for your needs in many ways.

Maybe if a key issue is driving at night just get taxis to enable you to feel you have freedom to go out more - instead of thinking of it as a big expense as it's 30 minutes away, compare it to the cost of stamp duty, EA fees, etc. That's a lot of taxis!

2reefsin30knots · 02/02/2022 21:06

I think the west country is a bit nuts at the moment post covid.

Frome is very steep though, for a retirement property. Have you considered somewhere a bit less trendy with the London ex-pats? Maybe Taunton? Plenty of 3-4 beds walking distance into town on for under £450.

Charley50 · 02/02/2022 23:08

Whatever you do, don't sell and go into rented while house prices are still going up. Could easily find yourself priced out.

ExConstance · 03/02/2022 10:23

Thank you for all the comments, I think Frome will be a non starter, as most of the newish houses are not very attractive and the older character properties seem to have difficult layouts, no parking space etc. It was The Old Printworks I was looking at, I liked the 4 beds with open plan ktichen/living downstairs and first floor sitting room. Ill have a look at Taunton.

Taunton WOW

dalrympy · 03/02/2022 10:31

Wow indeed! I think we all need to move to Taunton!

CatherineMaitland · 03/02/2022 14:07

Imagine all the cobwebs on that high ceiling in Taunton, nothing other than a pain. Nice house though. :)

How about somewhere like Weston-super-Mare?

ExConstance · 03/02/2022 14:36

Weston? no thank you, I'm looking for somewhere a bit arty, suitable for older bohemian types like me, Weston is a very depressing place, we know a social worker there, it is very deprived with very little going on. We are both extremely fit and looking to stay that way. The place in the north we like is Hebden Bridge, we could afford to buy there but there is nothing for sale at the moment. We like it because it has an independent cinema, music at the Trades Hall and lots of vegan restaurants - also good walking. Taxis won't work for us, we don't mind driving at night as such but would just like to stroll out of our house and find nice things to do.

What about Stroud area?

ExConstance · 03/02/2022 15:25

We live very close to Stroud, it would be our preferred place to live but the houses stay on the market 2 minutes if that and the influx of Londoners has put up the price of the type of house we would like. Houses that were £350,000 2 years ago are now £500,000 and they are asking £400,000 for nice looking terraced houses which need a lot of money spending on them. I'd love to live in Old Stroud or near Daisy bank but it won't work for us financially.

If property is markedly cheaper there is probably a reason for it. I always thought Taunton really depressing unless it has recently changed

SheWoreYellow · 03/02/2022 15:30

Do you really need four bedrooms?

SheWoreYellow · 03/02/2022 15:33

Maybe your requirements are just too high. I did a very quick Rightmove and came up with this, but presumably there are reasons why it doesn’t work?
The thing is, you are going to get less house for your money if you move somewhere more buzzy. That’s the balance.

CatherineMaitland · 03/02/2022 16:02

Well, I like Weston and nearly bought a house there. Seemed to be some arts things going on, plus coast and hills to walk on and keep fit, and at least one vegan café, or café selling vegan bakes, on the front by the old pier. You never know, it might be the next big thing.

ended up in a village instead, but that's life.

Alexis7890 · 03/02/2022 16:35

Could you go over towards Shropshire? Herefordshire? Lots of beautiful places over there. We would love to go there but work keeps us close to Bristol

ExConstance · 03/02/2022 16:59

SheWoreYellow - that is a very nice house but not for us, there is no hallway and the front door opens straight into the living room. DH won't have a log burner for environmental / health reasons, and it is terraced so everything would have to go through the house to the garden. DH would moan because there is no garage.
I'm afraid we are far too picky! We would be subject to ridicule on Location x 3.

I was brought up in Shropshire, don't really want to go back. Worcester might be OK, might go back and have a look there. Bristol would be fantastic but far tooexpensive unless we had a 2 bed flat!

OP posts:
SheWoreYellow · 03/02/2022 17:07

You don’t have to use the log burner! And no hall doesn’t seem like it’s a deal breaker.

But yeah I guess if you want a garage and garden access then fair enough.

But then you won’t get 3 beds plus studio in a cool location. So something needs to give.
