Just having a moan. Apologies in advance and helpful constructive advice will be appreciated. Feel free to tell me to shut up if you want. Either way I don't mind.

On Monday morning builders turned up and started digging foundations for next door neighbours extension. I was aware they had planning permission but was not aware when the build was about to begin.

We are not joined to our neighbours. Planning permission says they can build 1 metre from the boundary. OK that's fine but their builders have dug a trench for foundations about a foot from our house. That trench is now knee deep in water - they say they don't know the source. On their drive is a shared sewer that they share with us and another neighbour. This has been uncovered but isn't the source of all the water. The plan was to relocate this further back into their garden but all work was stopped because of said foot of water they were knee deep in.

Our neighbours have had no conversation with us about Party Wall Agreements. No conversation about when the build will start. And no conversation with us about the builders and the JVC digger we caught on our block paving drive when we unexpectedly returned home this morning. DH had to go out with the hose and wash it all down after they had gone because anyone that came into my house was trampling soil in. eek I sound like Hyacinth Bucket Shock

I think they are rude fuckers.

Moaning aside, I'm actually quite worried about my house and the potential damage. We don't have money for expensive injunctions to stop them. The family that live next door moved out weeks ago and we don't know where they has gone. And their builders buggered off at lunchtime.

Today, we discovered that our mains water supply is shared. It is also supplied by lead pipe. WTF? Whilst I'm glad that we are now aware of a potential hazard to our health that we can now do something about, we really could be doing without this right now. We are going to have to pay to get this fixed - lead poisoning is non negotiable. Their builders have kindly Hmm left the pipe above ground for us, perched precariously on bricks. What happens if it freezes or gets knocked?

They have uncovered a nightmare. What do we do?

Extra information and potentially why I'm especially pissed off is because neighbours 2 storey extension which will block the light from my south facing lounge will in future be known as the dark room of doom. The council said that's fine because we have other rooms to use - Hmm the kitchen or the hall (good if you don't want to watch the telly or sit down)

Also worried about the tree with a TPO in our garden that they have sliced through the roots of to dig their bloody trench. Think I will start with this ...

You should have home insurance and hopefully family legal protection, get onto them and explain what have said here

There should be conditions on the planning permission to protect the TPO tree - there is usually a requirement for a root protection zone to be set up.

Ring the Council and ask to speak to the Tree officer.
