Removals experiences with difficult parking access

I am feeling a bit stressed. Due to move in a month. I live on a busy street with double yellows outside my front door all the way up that side of the road. Everyone parks on the other side. It is pretty busy all the time. The removals firm have asked me to “speak to the neighbours across road and ask them nicely not to park there for a few hours” on moving day. Thing is, it’s not just neighbours that park there - there’s a gp surgery, a school and various businesses on the road so all sorts of people are coming and going all the time. I don’t feel confident about my ability to keep clear a big space for a removals van.

Has anyone had any experience of how removals have been tackled in places where the access is difficult? Do I buy cones and put them out, and risk the wrath of locals? Can you get permits for these sort of things? Not much experience of moving house so not sure what to do. And people are so touchy about parking around here.

Comes?

Sorry, cones!
Can you get hold of some cones out some notices around to keep clear. Or can you borrow some neighbours/friends cars to occupy the space until the point at which the removals firm arrives?

I had this. I asked a couple of friendly neighbours to park in the spaces I needed the night before and then move in the morning as the removal van arrived.

Get a permit from your local council parking department.

Part of moving is pissing everyone off about the removals van.

Your best option is blocking the space yourself and moving when the van arrives.

My local council would put a temporary parking suspension up for a fee (of £80 per day I think). The downside is that there are extra fees to tow away any cars which ignore the suspension, so it would be best to accompany this with cones/ wheelie bins/ people stood in the spot until the lorry arrives.

Thank you everyone that’s helpful advice.
I hadn’t thought about blocking the space with my own / friend’s cars. Good idea.

Speak to the council
I used to work as a relocation agent and we often used to have to get parking bays/yellow lines etc suspended.
It costs but it’s not a huge hassle to do

Thehobbit2013 · 01/02/2022 12:25

Why are the removal company not assisting with this? They usually turn up and start knocking on doors to ask people to move their cars

Ifailed · 01/02/2022 12:38

Agree with PPs, speak to your neighbours initially. I had the same problem a while back and after a quick survey nearby I was able to point to alternative parking places nearby for the day.
Only one refused to help, not a surprise as he was the local curmudgeon. For some reason the removal people parked right up behind him so he couldn't move. How we laughed.

When we were in this position we got a permit from the parking dept of the council to close some of the bays. But they just put little signs up on lampposts which were roundly ignored, so we had to stand out there and flap people away for ages. I’d suggest cones and tape as well as a permit.

Borrow cars and get them parked in the space that you need .

I just put my car and my sons car in a particular space for my opposite neighbours removal vans so that when the van arrived I just went and moved my cars for them

Tulipvase · 01/02/2022 19:54

Will the removal men need to be crossing the road - that sounds like a pain?

We live on a main road with double yellows and they just parked outside when we moved.
