If you were redoing an ensuite...

What would you have / do?

I've never had one before and have moved into a house with a rather dated one. I have the bathroom fitters here this week doing the main bathroom, then they'll move onto the ensuite.

They are extending it slightly to make room for a 900x900 shower and I have bought a wall hung sink cabinet thing in oak and a loo. I haven't chosen tiles yet but I like the cliq ones from Topps.

I'm just wondering if there were any little twiddles you did at fitting stage that made it better/ more user friendly etc. Maybe somewhere to put make up or an inset shelf thing?

Added a new ensuite to last year and redid family bathroom.
Echo pp with underfloor heating (it's comforting)!
Shower in family bathroom is wet room style and easy to clean. Shower in ensuite is 3 sided cubicle only 800 x 900 but is fine and we also have a freestanding bath in the ensuite too.
Definitely aim for 2 fittings - rainfall and regular with ability to turn on and miss the water!
Niche for toiletries, lighting on mirrored cabinets, storage under sink..... Double sinks if space!
Heated towel rail for warm towels.
Sliding barn door is a space saver but also gives it a boutique hotel feel.
Only regret is the light (almost white) floor tiles which always seem to need a clean!

Inset shelf. Wall mounted loo & sink unit so you can just swish a mop underneath. Towel rail that you can operate separately from central heating. We have an underfloor heating pad in our en-suite - surprisingly inexpensive! Our room is tiny, so we've gone for big square grey stone effect tiles with grey grouting - same size tiles on wall & floor.

900x900 is fine for a shower.

For the love of God get a detachable shower head! Ideally no fixed one at all, they are a nightmare to clean, but if you do get a fixed then get one with a detachable hose head as well.

Don't get plain floor tiles, they show up all the dirt, get patterned or textured.

Quartz for shower walls instead of individual tiles. It's so easy to clean as there isn't any grout. It looks beautiful too.
We have this is 3 out of 4 bathrooms and it's just fantastic.

Panels instead of tiles in the shower, separate extractor fan to light, and a pocket door (would be my top 3)

A motion-detector low light, so that if someone has to visit the loo in the middle of the night, they have some light, but not enough to be blinding, or to wake up anyone else in the room. The other advantage is that it won't set off the extractor, the way bathroom lights usually do.

Ventlation, ventilation, ventilation.
Compared with that, who cares what it looks like.

If not decent ventilation you get loo smells - even if nothing nasty, just the smell of the loo-cleaner/disinfectant - wafting into the bedroom. Not restful, not romantic.
And so much damp. And potential mould.

And, as previous posters have said, get something easy to clean. Because, in a damp environment, if black mould can grow and stain anywhere, it most certainly will.
