How to rejig this kitchen

Is anyone any good at designing kitchens? We're not at the stage of going to a company - we're just deciding whether to offer on a house or not. The kitchen is the sticking point we can't agree on. We need WAY more worktop space, and a bigger/extendable dining table. I don't mind so much if the table has to go in the one marked "dining room" (though that room could have other uses if not) BUT if it was in there then I think I'd prefer an adjoining door/archway. But then this takes away valuable wall/worktop space.

Aside from getting rid of any full height cupboards and splitting them to regain a bit of worktop, what else can we do to really maximise the working space?

I can't even picture it being especially useful to knock through both rooms into one as kitchen worktops would end up too spread out to be efficient.

In case it matters, the worktop space is important as we have more appliances than them that would be out all the time (e.g. microwave, large 4 slice toaster, large breadbin, kettle, coffee maker and was hoping to get an instant pot after the move) plus we cook and bake a lot and just generally need plenty space for chopping, serving up, etc.

Any help gratefully received!

@Ikeameatballs

I think you’d be able to get a washer-dryer in your space under the stairs? Might even get both in there?
There's already a boiler or water tank in that cupboard (I can't remember which) and there's no more space and no more cupboards in the house.

My friend's kitchen / dining area is like this and it works so well. They have the sink on the right side and hob on the island.

Also lots of drawers on one side of the island and shallow cupboards on the side with the seating.

@renovate120 you might be able to move a boiler to the loft. My parents did that.

I'd put a utility on the left where the door is in the kitchen. Keep the plumbing and sink in there. Build a wall to separate it from the kitchen, open the kitchen up into the dining room and rejig the windows along that wall. Then you have a back door from the utility and whatever doors, bifolds, windows you want in your new kitchen/diner.

And double glass doors from the hallway into the kitchen diner, as you have 2 doors there now. If you put bifolds in the kitchen diner, you'd see straight through to the garden from the hallway, and presumably the front door.

Lose both kitchen doors, take down wall between kitchen and dining room, double doors in dining room, peninsula between kitchen and dining room. (An island may take up far too much space!)

Not sure how I'm doing for scale here Grin, maybe it wouldn't all fit...

Here’s my suggestion. Proportions may be off as the utility looks abnormally large, but you get the idea!

Also you could forgo the pantry and have a toilet off the utility if it’s big enough.

ponkydonkey · 01/02/2022 10:03

I like @Whattochoosenow has designed!

You could also have a to the ceiling larder units along the fridge wall inc f/f

Forget the pantry and have a door to utility with loo and possibly a shower? With wash/ dryer and storage if there is enough space?

Whattochoosenow · 01/02/2022 10:32

IKEA used to have an online kitchen design thing which would help with sizes

This is lovely - you get a well planned space and keep the lovely light/view from both doors as you enter from the hall.
KaleKitchen · 07/02/2022 22:15

I have a kitchen along the lines of what @Whattochoosenow has designed

KaleKitchen · 07/02/2022 22:38

And it works really well.
