Bay Window Pole not going round corners

blowingagail · 29/01/2022 16:45

I have had bay poles fitted in two bay windows with 90 degree bends by my builder.

My curtains have taken weeks to make, arrived a couple of days ago and I've now hung them. They don't travel round the corners at all well, in fact to get them to go round the bend without pulling all the pleats out of the top you really need to stand on something. That won't be happening on a daily basis!

Does anyone know if this is solveable?

I've googled and seen mention of silicone spray and easy glide tape but would love to hear about direct experience of this nightmare.

They won't go around right angles. You'll need narrow, separate curtains on the sides.

Yes we used to have a curtain pole like this and separate curtains, 6 in total, was exactly what we did.

Ours go round this much of a bend ok.

That won't work in my window without having curtains covering the actual windows.

Would a curtain pole help?

SheWoreYellow · 29/01/2022 16:54

That’s what I meant. Rods. Not pole.

blowingagail · 29/01/2022 17:01

Thank you, I hadn't thought of rods, I'll ask the pole company too I think for their advice.

I've googled pictures of windows with multiple curtains and that wouldn't be for me - too fussy.

I had a temporary cheap track while I had some building work done and put some old curtains up - worked fine. I think it is the pole that is the issue, I reckon tracks must glide easier.

Just seen your post yellow, thanks, I reckon I might have to consider a decent track if these poles don't work.

I don't like those much Kar 😬. The poles I bought cost almost as much as those JL things so I need to try to make them work. I have got blackout linen roller blinds behind the curtains for sun (south facing) so am just using those in the front windows atm. I'll see what the pole shop say.

Good luck. I’ve got a cheapy track I just try not to look at it. The curtains were handmade and deserve better!

It looks like you have a track?
Is it a silentgliss track?
Is it a pole with bypass rings that are getting bunched at the corners?
I think that the problem is the track fitting which is a specialised job. The fitter has taken the track too far into the corner instead of having a smooth curve.
Hard to see from one photo.
Take the problem to the fitter although silicone spray or hair serum would help.

I don’t think the OP has posted a photo. Are you looking at mine?

We have a pole with a right angle. There’s definitely a knack to getting the curtain round the corner. I sort of bunch the rings at the corner then flick them round the corner with the curtain then pull the curtain fully. That probably doesn’t make much sense. You need to get all the rings round the corner with the curtain bunched up before yo pull it across.

Mykittensmittens · 30/01/2022 17:38

I have a pole and a five sided bay. The pole has several bends and the curtains are on hooks which have a ‘pass-over’ gap to get over the brackets.

If this is what you mean, there is a knack!

Opening is done v gently and you don’t open from the middle gap, you open from the far side. 3 small pulls and it’s open. If I try to open from the middle it just jams. Closing is done slowly. One pull to get over the first bracket, one the second, one more.

Still masses better than the plastic tracks.

17to35 · 30/01/2022 19:00

Sorry, SheWoreYellow, indeed I was looking at your track!
I suspect a bypass pole. I recommend a metropole but suspect op won't like it.

blowingagail · 30/01/2022 19:29

You're right 17, I don't like that style of track.

Can't you just get a pair of draw rods to fit to the curtains for a tenner? Then you can stand on the ground and draw the curtains and ease them round the bends (I have exactly same issue, large bay with metal curtain pole curved to fit - and the curtains now much easier to draw)

Kipperandarthur · 30/01/2022 22:53

You are going to need draw rods. I have the same issue but don’t draw the curtains in my bay window downstairs as there are blinds underneath.

Upstairs in the bay windows they are on a track with a boxed pelmet that a fitter made to hide the track. These have the posh pulley system but you have to yank to get round the bends.

The whole thing is a palaver. I looked at specifically made poles at £650 each but the angle was too sharp plus window sill depth necessitated curtain people with knowledge and fitter/carpenter to build the necessary.

Frankly with the cost of curtains it added up to way more than I anticipated.

Beesandthings · 31/01/2022 09:06

Are your curtain rings big enough? I found on one of my rods I needed to replace the rings with the biggest ones possible (they also had the silicon inner). Made a huge difference.

gluenotsoup · 31/01/2022 09:15

Sounds a bit basic, but have you tried polishing the poles with ordinary furniture polish? It helps them glide more easily but I haven’t tried it on a bay corner. It’s not going to cost anything so worth a try
