It can be, as it may well be more difficult to actually fit. Because of this we ended up not putting one in. I can’t say I’ve made the wrong decision as our kitchen / diner doesn’t get steamy or smoky. I just open the window a bit.

But thisone is just 950? is it not good?

You don't get as much choice which generally pushes price up and general opinion is that they're not very effective. No personal experience though.

The hob you’ve linked to can be put anywhere from what I can see.

The reasons islands are more expensive is that you have to get power to them through the floor because they aren’t connected to the walls.

Or do you mean a breakfast bar? Where the worktop and cupboards stick out into the room in an L shape?

Oh sorry I see what you mean now! Ignore my post

We are in the process of working out whether to do this too. Having looked up reviews of those down draught extractors, I'm dubious. Some need emptying, some arent as effective as an over head extractor and others put up a screen on the island when in use. Do you have space to put it elsewhere? Or swap for another appliance?

JustJam4Tea · 29/01/2022 06:51

We got a neff one, it’s pretty noisy on full draught as it’s got to pull steam down, but it’s effective. It was more expensive as had to put ducting under the screed. We we’re getting extension done so could do that.

But it works and like the look.

I think more expensive tends to be less noisy.

The cost of putting the hob on the island depends on how easy it is to get power there for it, and on the details of the extractor you want. A recirculating overhead extractor will be cheap.

An overhead extractor ducted to extract outside may be reasonably cheap (e.g. if the ducting can easily be installed between joists while the ceiling's down for other reasons, or if the ducting can be boxed in alongside a new beam or just go straight out through the roof of a new single storey extension).

A downdraft extractor ducted externally could be very expensive, especially if you need to dig up an existing floor slab to place ducting under it, then reinstate the slab afterwards.
