Hi guys, are these gas or electric? There are chimney breasts. I think the one with the tiled surround is electric, but not sure. Anyone know?

The wider one is gas the narrower is electric.

Bingo! 10 PTS to gryffindor. Thanks @pussycatunpickingcrossesagain

OP, I'm guessing you would want to remove them?
The gas one will need a gas engineer (to cap off the gas pipe), but it's probably possible to remove the electric one if there's a fused switch nearby. (I did this in my house). Getting rid of the 'chimney' may be a more difficult task!

Hi @Sideswiped, I want to replace with a nice fireplace. Not sure whether gas or electric yet. But appreciate it needs to be done by a professional. I'm not planning on lifting a finger :-)

Oh and keeping the chimney breasts

@areyouhavingagiraffe, you would need to investigate if the 'chimney' above the electric fire is actually one. I suspect it isn't and is there for 'show' IYSWIM.

That electric fire is built onto what looks like the original chimney breast with alcoves either side. If there's a corresponding chimney breast in the room above and chimney on the roof you could change it and make it look lovely. And less 1960s/70s.

areyouhavingagiraffe · 27/01/2022 08:55

@sideswiped, thanks. The chimney breasts continue all the way up the house. And a chimney on the roof. How do you establish if it is just there for show?

Apologies, I meant the sloped bit on the front!

My aunt used to have that exact fire! It's gas and electric

There should be a small tap somewhere nearby to switch off the gas... ours was near the gas meter

First one is gas second is electric. If you intend to put in a real fire you will need to find out if the chimney breast has been sealed. The gas fire will have a flue somewhere. Also the chimney needs to be the right height for a fire to draw, previous owners may have had the chimney lowered. The flue will need sweeping and testing before you invest in an expensive mistake. You also need to find out if you can legally have an open fire. Unless you are rural it’s unlikely.
