Best led down lights

I need to replace my halogens but don't know what to best replace them with. They need to be dimmable but bright at full beam, and a good spread of light, and warm white. Any ideas? They're for a kitchen and office area.

Do you mean the whole light or just the bulbs? If the former then I've had these fitted:

Astro make great lighting and are available from lots of places online. The recess into the ceiling means you don't get glare from the bulbs. They come in IP rated versions for bathrooms or fire rating (for kitchens) and in square, double and all in black or white. Highly recommend.

We've got these: www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/LTSM5WW.html

If you'd prefer, they're available in "neutral white" and "daylight white" options as well as the warm white linked to above.

They were the ones the electricians put in when they installed the fittings, and they're great. Nice wide angle so you don't get annoyingly patchy lighting and sharp shadows when you're trying to work in a kitchen or office.

Assuming you currently have reasonably modern-looking GU10 fittings, I wouldn't replace them with integrated LED fittings. There's a big advantage in being able to replace the bulb. I'm not against integrated LEDs where they allow the light fitting to be made in a better, more convenient or attractive form factor than was possible with older lighting technologies, but nothing could be more unobtrusive than a recessed downlight or more convenient than a fitting you already have in place.

Just wondered if you made a decision on your lights @Soopermum1 ? I have the same requirements as you although mine are for a kitchen/ diner. My builder is trying to discourage me from getting dimmers - says they don't work properly on LED downlights. But it's really important to me to be able to dim them and I refuse to believe with all the modern technology available that it's not possible to get dimmable downlights!

Whatever one you get keep this in mind... When one of the bulbs goes unless you can replace it with exactly the same bulb then the colour temperature will likely be different and you will notice it. Its a right pain.

We have the LEDLites ones linked above and they're great, but I don't think they're dimmable.

The issue with finding replacement bulbs which match well is a real one, so it's worth buying a couple more than you need. Then again, I have never had any LED bulb fail so I haven't used any of the spares in the shed yet - touch wood!
