How do I ever get rid of this dust after knocking a ceiling down?

Knocked a plasterboard ceiling down today and there is dust EVERYWHERE.

Feels like my house will never be dust free again after this.

I need real tips/tricks or advice on genuinely getting rid of the dust, it’s on top of every surface upstairs, in radiators, windows, windowsills, cupboards, walls, lights!!

We have bagged all the old plasterboard, obviously will sweep and get rid of it as much as we can. Sweeping and hoovering doesn’t seem enough though!

Buy a builder's canister vac, with a spare cartridge filter and some bags. Probably about 30 litres.

example The wet and dry vac will also suck up water. This one has a socket for a tool such as a saw or sander, starting the vac when you start the tool.

The bags will catch most of the dust and delay clogging of the filter. When the filter is clogged fit the spare and brush the dirty filter clean.

When the filter is clogged and impregnated to the pores, wash it in the sink and use the clean one until it is completely dry.

A cheap builders vac should have a 2 year guarantee so you can take it back if it fails. Your building work will not last two years.

When you think you have got the room completely clean, sponge and wet-mop it until the sponge stays clean.

Put doormats inside and outside the room. The sort you can hose clean.

Your domestic vac will not withstand builders dust.

The tools are not very good but you can buy a kit cheaply

it might be 35mm size but check

I was just going to say buy a proper builders hoover but I see pigletJohn got there first! We converted our cellar a couple of years ago and all the walls were stripped back to brick and all the ceilings came down. I remember driving home one day and it looked like the house was on fire so much black dust was bellowing out of it….I just kept on driving! The dust will keep settling for a while, but as long as you get the bulk of it out and then just wipe down and hoover regularly for a while it will eventually go, don’t worry!

In a couple of weeks once the dust has settled (obviously clean between now and then, but the dust will continue to fall), you could do a vegetable oil mop of the floors to lift any final bits. But the bulk of the work will be achieved using the builders hoover.
