What attracts you to there? It wouldn't be my first choice of places in Scotland to live, but presumably you have a reason for wanting there specifically?

Post on Scotsnet for locals opinions

What’s it called Cumbernauld,,,why do you want to live there then?

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 22/01/2022 23:18

The town centre is a bit dire tbh. I wouldn’t unless I had close family ties in the area

echt · 22/01/2022 23:36

Cumbernauld always make me think of "Gregory's Girl", which was filmed there. It was 1981, so I expect it's changed.

Not helpful, I know.

I live in Cumbernauld. It certainly wasn't my first choice but we wanted to leave Glasgow and the right house was available at the right price. We're still here 6 years later and very settled. I swore we'd only stay for 3 years!

It's very much a town of two halves. The biggest bulk of Cumbernauld is to the east of the motorway, with the very dire town centre and lots of the original new town.

West of the motorway, it's mostly newer housing estates. Housing isn't particularly cheap here, lots of commuters attracted by the train station and motorway access are keeping the prices up. We can drive to Edinburgh in 45 mins, Glasgow in 20 mins, Falkirk and Stirling are both very easy to get to.

There are rumblings of plans to knock down the town centre and start again, which would be great but knowing North Lanarkshire Council, it might not happen! Similarly, there's plans for cinema and leisure facilities that have been talked about for ages with little progress.

Where we are is great for families, there's sports facilities, classes and groups. Easy access to the countryside with a loch, canal walks, country parks/walks within 5-10 minutes (Palacerigg, Cumbernauld Glen, Colzium in Kilsyth). Plenty of choice for food shopping (supermarkets and independent butchers etc) and you can get basics in the town centre. Glasgow Fort is only about 20 minutes away.

We are happy with our chosen primary school but will be keeping an eye on how the high schools perform in the next few years.

I wouldn't want to live here without a car, public transport is available but a car is definitely easier - it's quite a spread out town.

If you are new to the town, I wouldn't say there's much of a community feel. You very much have to find your own village and it's taken me a while.

My biggest bugbear is how far we are from the coast!

Michellebops · 23/01/2022 07:19

As craneville says, it's central with good links to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
I've lived here for 8 years and worked here for 20.

Some of the local areas wouldn't go near but there are some nice areas too and some great schools.

Town centre is dire but Glasgow fort is about 15 minutes away.

Good luck 🤞🏻

Can I just jump on the bandwagon?

We are considering moving to either Cumbernauld or Motherwell as DH's employer has sites in both locations. Would you recommend one over the other?

FWIW- DH was actually born in the area but moved away as a child and I've never really explored the area when we have been up as we're usually just up for a flying visit for family weddings etc.

masterofdoomv1 · 23/01/2022 12:32

no harm in asking mrs

@mrsmoastytoasty I would say the best idea is to spend some time in both towns. Motherwell is older so has more of a traditional town layout and set up. And older houses which you don't really get in Cumbernauld. Dalzell High (or maybe Academy) is considered the best secondary in the whole region but I think demand is high.

Although, in all honesty, ifi had the choice of a commute to Cumbernauld or Motherwell then I'd also consider somewhere else, budget allowing. Strathaven, Uddingston, Lanark, Hamilton etc would allow an easy commute to Motherwell. Falkirk, Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and even Stirling for Cumbernauld.

I know my reply is even later, so sorry to bump an old thread guys.
But I have the same question, anyone know what the blocks of maisonettes on braehead road are like? In terms of roughness.
I think they’re ex council homes.

Michellebops · 05/09/2024 12:39

Even later replying here

Braehead Road is ok,
I would avoid millcroft in carbrain.

Kildrum primary is ok, I have friends kids there who don't love it, but there are better schools if you don't mind driving a few minutes

Kyogo67 · 08/09/2024 20:38

They are rough
Some parts of Seafar and Ravenswood are okay but I would steer clear of Carbrain and parts of Kildrum
