Filling a 10cm gap in plasterboard

When the previous owner of our house extended it, they left the upvc front door in place as an internal door between the new porch and the entrance hall. We've just removed the door and frame and there is now about a 10cm gap between the plasterboard in the porch and the plasterboard in the hall. What would be the best way to fill the gap? Would gyproc easi fill do the job?

I would fill it with plasterboard myself.

I wondered about that - any particular reason you would use board rather than filler?

Because 10 cm is a very big gap to fill with filler!

It would be much easier to cut a strip od plasterboard to size, crew it in and then tape and skim than it would be to fill it with filler.

What is in the gap?

*of plasterboard

*screw it in

There's nothing in the gap, just brick behind. So no battens or anything to screw plasterboard on to.

Does it have to be filled? You could use architrave to cover it instead.

cornflakegirl · 23/01/2022 09:33

I can't envisage how architrave would work?
I've tried adding a photo but it keeps failing. It's one continuous wall, with plasterboard to the right and left of this 10cm floor to ceiling gap. (Gap in the ceiling too, and on opposite wall.)

If you put a photo I can advise.
From your description though I’d agree with the person who said drywall, tape, plaster. But I’d add- you put a baton on the brick. You attach the drywall to the baton. Then go ahead.

Strip of plasterboard, dot and dab it on. Tape on the join and then make good x

Cissyandflora · 23/01/2022 09:40

Batten I mean. Not baton. I’ve just educated myself!

You can attach the plasterboard with plasterboard adhesive (dot and dab) or apply bonding and then a finish coat. My husband is a builder and he said he would probably do the bonding and finish coat.

Get a quote it'll be a professional job & you won't have to buy materials that you may never use again.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. I was really struggling to Google because I didn't know what search terms I needed!

I don't think that will work for a floor to ceiling gap. But it's a handy trick to know, so thank you!
