No downstairs loo and have a toddler

I am moving into a new rented house with my 18 month old and the new house has no downstairs toilet. My mother is constantly going on and on about this and thinks I've made a terrible mistake choosing this property. She is mortified.

For context, we are moving from a high rise flat with no garden in an antisocial area to a lovely green community and house with small garden. There was limited choice and budget and I felt this house ticked many though not all boxes.

If you have no downstairs toilet and a toddler do you have any tips for managing day to day life so I can assure my mother I've got it sorted?!!

I’ve never had a downstairs loo.

However, I did develop thighs you could crack walnuts with by continuously running up the stairs with toddlers needing a wee.

It’ll be fine!

When I was growing up it was the norm for most houses to have only one toilet, which was usually upstairs if the house was two storeys.

The when I was a toddler (back in the late 1960s) my parents house only had an upstairs toilet. I don't think it was an issue at all, it was just the way things were. Your mother is worrying unnecessarily.

We moved to a bungalow when I was almost four and my sister was a year old. No upstairs as bungalows are all on one level. Still only one toilet. We survived.

I have a 2 and 5yo and didn't even consider it a thing, only having an upstairs loo. We have a potty downstairs and it works just fine. Ignore your mum and enjoy your new home.

When potty training you just have a potty downstairs. It's better for them to learn they need to be able to hold it a little bit/tell you immediately they need to go. Once you are out and about most shops/playgrounds etc dont have a toilet in the next room or have a queue
You'll be fine and your new house sounds lovely enjoy it

There are lots of ‘nice to haves’ in life! This is one of them. Millions live in houses with no downstairs loo and millions have brought up children in them. It will be fine, in the same way, not having a utility room or a study is absolutely fine.

Focus on the improvements from your last place - the garden, lack of flights of stairs, better area. Enjoy your new home. And tell your Mum how much you’re looking forward to all those things.
