Where to move in the UK?

DH, baby and I currently live in Bristol where we grew up. We bought our house in august 2021 and it's a lovely 4 bed house in a nice family area good for schools, transport etc but it's just so boring, no real buzz or anything going on. We used to rent a flat in Clifton near the city centre and would absolutely love to live there again, it's just so ridiculously expensive for what you get. We also have a Labrador that needs a decent sized garden which is impossible to find in Clifton or nearby areas.

Anyway we can move anywhere in the UK as we run our own business from home so we thought why limit our options to just one place.. preferably we'd like to live no more than 2.5-3 hours away from our families. So really what we're looking for is that urban buzz but in a relatively low crime family area with good schools, doesn't have to be too close to a major city, could be a small town with charm with independent shops, cafes, restaurants, markets, parks.. bonus points if there's a beach nearby. Nothing too out the way or rural, we are city people and don't want to feel cut off from the rest of the world Grin

We've looked at Cornwall, Falmouth looks really nice but there aren't many houses on the market at the moment.. we'd live near London but prices are crazy in the sort of area we'd move to.. we also like Liverpool but it's maybe a bit too far.. Surrey could be another option but don't know much about the different areas. Just as an example of areas we've looked at so far.

Our absolute maximum budget is 950k and looking to move in next 2-3 years before our son starts school.

Any recommendations? Smile TIA

But of a schlep but I've always liked Lymington. Lovely pubs, lido, , good walks, Wightlink to the Isle of Wight, not far from the New Forest. This one is £950k: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/118846040

Totnes? It is not urban but lovely high street, loads going on community wise and close to beaches. On mainline route to London etc.

Revisit the Bournemouth idea but focus on Christchurch/Southbourne or even Lymington is you want to go as far the New Forest. Definitely lots of community stuff going on in those places - Christchurch has plenty of independent shops/cafes and even a food festival. I believe the schools are good too. And a few “naice” restaurants in that area too.

I agree you need Kirsty and Phil Grin - they'd love searchers like you with a big budget and a wide search area.

I'd consider Manchester (eg Didsbury / Chorlton), Cheltenham (not as buzzy as Bristol but somewhat reminiscent of Clifton), Brighton...

But actually I think you might just be in the wrong part of Bristol! How about Westbury Park? Urban and buzzy. It's a small area so only a few pubs/cafés/restaurants but very good ones, some nice independent shops, and close to the Downs and Clifton.

Some of your priorities might change once your children are at school. There's so much for children and teenagers in Bristol.

OP sometimes we find ourselves in a good position that gives choice. (I'm with you here) So many choices means a harder decision.
I've narrowed it down to Brighton. A bit far but not too far to schlepp up to London occasionally. Transport links are fantastic.
Now we need to find what part of Brighton ☺️

West Bridgford near Nottingham has all your needs except a beach

Exeter? It’s my go to city these days (I live halfway between Exeter and Bristol but love Exeter’s vibe). It reminds me of Canterbury where I grew up.

I wouldn't go to Cornwall from Bristol. From Bristol it's easy to get every where in the country - including airports for hols abroad. Cornwall is far away from everything, it's rammed in the summer and the roads are awful. Brighton has gone really downhill with drugs and homelessness from what I've heard, I always found it rough though tbf.

I'd go for Hungerford, Marlborough, Winchester, Cheltenham, Exeter or maybe Southampton which I also think is under rated. It sounds like you really love Bristol though so I'd explore that a bit more before going elsewhere.
