We are considering offering on this house. It’s one of the very few in our budget and in an ideal location. It’s a refurbished bungalow with roof extended up and dormers so the upstairs walls are sloping in places.
The downsides are the stairs in the open plan lounge (although they are quite discreetly in the corner) but I’m not sure if this will be an issue? And the landing upstairs is tiny which makes upstairs feel rather small. The utility is small but I can deal with that. What do you think? Anything I should be aware of? We are moving from a flat so have no idea what living in a house with DC will be like or things we need to be aware of. Thank you
We have 2 little DC under 3.

Diagram!

Pls.

Our previous house had the stairs coming up from the lounge and it didn’t bother me.

Caramellatteplease · 20/01/2022 22:17

I'd worry it would be a bit cold and uncosy with the open plan and 2 storey "hole" for the stairs. But then I like living rooms you can close off so you dont get draughts

whistleinthewind · 20/01/2022 22:21

Depending on who would use them. The lower bedrooms are next to entertaining space that is open plan, which tends to be loud.

Your entertainment space is above 2 bedrooms that maybe kids rooms. Most houses I've lived in it's our room that bears the brunt of entertainment noise so our children are relatively sheltered. Might not be an issue here but we've lived in old houses

looks nice to me. go for it.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 20/01/2022 23:22

I would worry about a storage space off the bathroom. It's an invitation to mold for your stored items.

Justkeeppedaling · 20/01/2022 23:33

Having the stairs go up from the living room will
a) mean you lose a lot of heat and the living room will be difficult to keep warm
b) noise from the living room will go upstairs and keep DCs awake
c) smells from the kitchen will waft upstairs.

Been there, wouldn't do it again.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 21/01/2022 08:19

@Justkeeppedaling, I agree especially about kitchen smells. That's one reason (of many) that I just don't understand the appeal of an open kitchen in general! If one does any kind of real cooking, there will be smells, steam, and grease in the air - I would never want that in my reception or other living spaces, and certainly not bedrooms! I guess they're OK if, like my brother-in-law, the only cooking being done is on a sandwich press, but if doing any kind of sautéing or other real cooking, I just don't see the advantage.

I think it looks great. I really like the idea of the big open family living space then a separate cosier sitting room that I would have as the adults lounge for reading, adults' relation away from all the inevitable toys and stuff in the family room.

I would also snap this up if either adult is WFH, for the study!

KineticSand · 21/01/2022 08:29

That was supposed to say adult relaxation!

My parents have a similar dorma bungalow and boxed in the stairs and put a door on it. Could you do similar? My Dad's a carpenter so he did it himself. Only took 1 man 1 day.

Snowiscold · 21/01/2022 09:20

This. If you like it and the area is nice, stop fannying around (in the nicest way!) and crack on. Spend too long deciding and someone else will nab it

We have open plan with the stairs coming out the main living space. We don't find the smells travels but invested in a good extractor when we did the kitchen. We are moving soon and will open up the next house

CrimbleCrumble1 · 21/01/2022 14:36

I think it looks great, the layout is flexible, you could have the downstairs bedroom as a playroom or hobbies room. It would work for WFH too.

Glad you got it - it sounds great! Good luck, I hope all goes smoothly Flowers

BluebellsGreenbells · 22/01/2022 09:51

We live in a similar property - it’s great for kids as we can see them from the kitchen and I can listen to the TV.

Plus a small landing is less vacuuming!!

Some are put off bungalows but ours is very well insulated, lots of storage space in the eves and lost space we’ve never use most of it!
