Wallpaper in old houses, low ceilings, picture rails

We have a Tudor cottage. Lots of exposed beams, low ceilings, not a straight line in the place.

I’d love to have a patterned wallpaper in the bedroom but can’t see how it can be fitted given the wonky line where the walls meet the ceiling. I did wonder about a picture rail to create a straight line but will this look ridiculous in a house of this age- I think it will. Any idea what else I could do?

Yes picture rail would look awful if ceiling are low. Would a wallhanging of fabric across whole wall suit as then you get the patterned effect without altering a period property inappropriately. Personally I would stick with plain walls and make the focus about the Tudor features ie beams, doors etc with pattern in soft furnishings.

Paper the ceiling as well! It can look good...sometimes

It can follow a wonky line at the top if it’s fitted well will look in keeping with the wonky walls
