Will we have to pay for gas leak?

We have a gas leak. Pin hole size in the copper pipe connecting to the gas meter (I believe).
Emergency man came round last night and advised it's Octopus (our supplier) who have to fix it.

Will we be charged?

suspect it'll depend on the cause, but essentially the network is generally responsible for anything leading up to the meter, you are generally responsible for anything running off the meter.

they may argue otherwise if there is damage that has been caused by neglect or deliberately.

Thanks @FixTheBone, called them to check and they said it'll be fixed at no charge.

@hannahcolobus they've been now and didn't charge thankfully. The emergency mam last night had to cap off the gas as it was classed as 'immediately dangerous'.

Grateful to have heating and hot water back on now!

That happened to us. The hole was caused by solder that had been dripped on the pipe during installation and then slowly corroded it until there was a hole.

ClaudiaWankleman · 20/01/2022 14:22

Can I ask how you discovered the hole @prayingforrainbows and @Justkeeppedaling ? Did you smell gas?

prayingforrainbows · 20/01/2022 14:33

@ClaudiaWankleman yes I could smell gas, it was so mild and disappeared a few seconds after I opened the cupboard where the metre and pipes are. DH could smell it too. Faint but there.

It was a tiny little hole where the gas was leaking from.

Now that's a story!

We went on hols for two weeks and came home late at night to a house that smelled badly of gas.

We're opened all windows, put the kids to bed and decided to ring the gas company in the morning. We thought the pilot light had gone out so tried relighting it.

Gas man came next day and found a hole big enough to stick a Bic biro in, in a pipe in the garage, where the boiler with the pilot light we tried to light is.

He shut down the system immediately, and taped it all off. When he came back the next day to repair it, he asked if he could take the bit of pipe to use when he was training new engineers and told us we were v v lucky not to have blown ourselves up as well as the houses either side of us! The garage was full of gas, and DD had been sleeping in the room right above.

In hindsight, so were we!!

We'd had a looong drive home from France and were knackered. Probably affected our judgment.

It was about 15 years ago. I still go into a cold sweat when I think about it. The house was full of gas, like a bomb. And we slept in it. With our kids!!!

Thanks for sharing stories. I am quite a chilled out person but gas and carbon monoxide really worry me! Glad to hear everyone is safe and well.

This is so scary
I'm so glad you got sorted
