Where did you move to from London for secondary?

Been in London 20 years. No family here except my own (dh and 2 kids, we are very much a nuclear family) Like large towns or city outskirts. Don't need to commute but need train links. Good secondary school that progress the vast majority to university.

Can anyone share their experiences and where?

We moved to Notts to be near family and use the grammar schools in Grantham. Depends whether you think they'd pass the 11+
Train to kings cross is about an hour.

whataboutbob · 20/01/2022 11:21

Stayed in London on the basis that schools are better here than in much of the country.

DaisyWaldron · 20/01/2022 11:34

York has excellent state schools, and London is 2 hours by train. I know quite a few families where one person works mostly from home with a day in London every week.

Somanyquestions1984 · 20/01/2022 12:00

If my job allowed and I had the finances I would move back to London in a heartbeat for the schools

Northumberland

Ripon.

Both schools outstanding at the minute, though one awaiting report.

One is a selective grammar, admitting on 11+ pass and distance from the school.

(Also offers state boarding).

Blossomgate22 · 20/01/2022 13:34

Sorry, to add. Small (tiny) city but regular bus to Harrogate and further to Leeds.
East Coast to London from Thirsk station which is a 15 minute drive away.

TheChemicalMother · 20/01/2022 14:36

Stayed in London. Brilliant state secondaries. (non-leafy area).

Are you wanting to move anyway?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/01/2022 14:56

Oxford, but if you're in the catchment for Cherwell School it might not be any cheaper than London...

NotCure172 · 20/01/2022 17:22

Solihull has excellent secondary schools and good rail links to London

sm40 · 20/01/2022 17:26

Look at Bromley SE London. Green, great secondaries and train links.

SpikeySmooth · 20/01/2022 17:31

We considered moving during Y6 but a place came up at an excellent state secondary near us so we stayed. If I were to go "home" DD would be travelling up to an hour to the nearest "good" school.

What if they don't pass, or one does and other doesn't, and we already made a big old move...? (I don't want to rent)

York is lovely. And excellent schools. It's quite small though

Sorry you regret it. Are there no positive from your move? What about the school do you not like, and where in London would you go for schools?

Ripon does look very good. But like all grammars - what if a child doesnt get in?

Winchester? Westgate then Peter Symonds?

Funny enough I looked into Cherwell - Summertown area - houses are pretty much London prices. New Marston didn't look so nice

Bromley (a house in the right area gives access to excellent non selectives, super selective grammars, Kent grammars and Bexley grammars).

Tapticktoes · 20/01/2022 21:55

@NotCure172 DH is interested in Birmingham but I couldn't figure out schools. What will the options be?
