Would you buy a house near a prison?

I have seen a beautiful property that fits all our wants and is £50k below our budget. It doesn't need any work doing to it and you could move straight in. The only issue is the proximity to a prison. It's literally 300 yards away. That's why it's so cheap isn't it?

@FurierTransform

Wouldn't bother me at all. Probably a positive long term as at least it's unlikely to be turned into more houses, putting pressure on local schools, doctors etc.
Tell that to the residents of Holloway Wink

Oh and years ago, I lived literally 100 yards from HMP Holloway while it was open, there were no problems with it, but I rented, not bought.

PS It was also about 0.5 miles from Pentonville. I worked there for a while as a nurse. A few people lived locally (some in prison service accommodation but a few in 'normal' accommodation, I don't remember any complaints.

My friend lives opposite at CAT C prison in Nottinghamshire, the only complaints are regular problems with parking (the staff car park across the road isn't sufficient, and staff + visitors park wherever else they can , leaving no parking for the cul-de-sac of houses opposite), and light pollution. As a previous poster mentioned, it's probably worth driving by at different times/days of the week to gauge noise levels / access etc.
@Shehasadiamondinthesky they are hardly there 24/7 or the officers and cameras are doing a piss poor job 🤣 I work in prisons and its really nothing like that. Yes, there are of course throwovers and so on, but it's hardly a daily occurrence even in the most central establishments. And drones are sent in from a distance, not outside of the perimeter fence.
Where the heck did you work?
As you would know I couldn't possibly tell you on mumsnet where I worked, but it was like this all the time.
Loads of unsavoury people hanging about round the back alleyway. I have no idea where the drones came from - I worked in medical.
I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be around there at night.

SilverHairedCat · 19/01/2022 13:31

Then I think your perception has been very skewed - it's absolutely not a 24/7 thing - who is picking up throwovers at 3am when the exercise yards are empty for example, and drones are not as common as you seem to think.

Had friends who lived near Wymott and Garth. They dominated the area and my friend used to see people pulling up in cars and chucking things over the walls from her lounge window.
