Moving to York, where to?

We have decided to move to York after talking about moving for a few years now.
I am just wondering where are the nice areas? Any areas to avoid? Would you recommend living walking distance or further out about 10 miles.
Also any information on preschools/nurseries as dd is 3.
Is it a nice place to bring up a family?

Any information I am grateful for

Heworth

Easy walk to town.

Nice but affordable area.

I've lived all over York as has your family.

Huntington also nice.

I mean my family...not your family lol

Bishopthorpe Road area is very popular; lovely high street and walking distance to city centre but housing tends to be Victorian terraces with yards rather than gardens and no off street parking. It’s pretty pricey and very trendy if that is your thing!!

There are some lovely villages but I wouldn’t recommend them if you will be travelling into York for work as you will get stuck in traffic. If that is not an issue then have a look at Stillingfleet, Escrick, Wheldrake and Elvington (to the South of York), Bishopthorpe, and Haxby/Wigginton (to the North).

I live in Fulford which is lovely. We walk into the city centre along the river (30 mins) but you can also cycle. Fulford has lots of 1930s style semi detached houses with gardens and garages. It has an excellent secondary school (voted the best in the North a couple of years ago) although York schools are all pretty good in my opinion. It is very popular and quite expensive, although there is a massive Persimmon estate currently being built on the edge of Fulford which will have some more affordable options.

Other areas I like are Stockton Lane and the roads leading off it. There are some gorgeous detached and semi detached properties round there.

In terms of nurseries, the Little Green Rascals chain is very popular. There’s one in Elvington and there’s a good Montessori in Fulford.

Forgot to add…York is a great place to bring up a family!

Haxby is lovely

We live in York and I would agree with much of the above. You could also consider Osbaldwick (which is where we are). Slightly cheaper than Heworth but not quite as 'naice'. There is a cycle path on a former train line so easy traffic-free route, or a bus route with regular services into the city centre. There is a nursery and a pre-school in Osbaldwick which both have good reputations (we used one in the City Centre which was very close to where my husband works).

Heslington/Badger Hill is nice BUT it is where the Unviersity is, so a lot of HMOs and students in the area. Yes to Fulford, which is lovely.

You'll get a lot of people say avoid Tang Hall (also close to us). It is a former council estate so historically had a lot of problems. It is still deprived to a degree, but not all of it is, and it is reflected in the house prices.

Derwenthorpe often comes up but I'm personally not keen. I think the houses are over-priced for what they are and they have tiny gardens.

What's your budget? House style preference? Do you need to be near the station?
Nurseries and pre-schools there is Facebook group YorkMumbler which will give good advice.
If you buy in some of the further villages you will be out of catchment for most secondaries and off the bus route. However your money will further.

Nursery: We're with Muddy Boots, they are amazing, my son is just thriving there and the staff are fabulous.

We live in Holgate/Acomb and love it. Near a park, increasingly nice cafes and shops, big gardens.

Keep us posted op!

I am just looking at York with a view to moving there when we come back from living abroad. I wondered if flooding is an issue at all in Fulford area?

Here you go: www.getthedata.com/flood-map/york

We used this to help us decide to live. My husband is a Geoscientist researching rivers. It was all I could do to stop him buying a house in a red zone!!

But in answer to your question, west of the A19 (Fulford Road) there is a risk of flooding. Less so east of the A19.
