To combine separate wc & bathroom?

We currently have a separate bathroom (small) and toilet upstairs. Now in desperate need up replacing. I have someone coming tomorrow to give me some quotes, but I can't decide wether to keep them separate or combine. I change my mind every day!
There are real pros and cons to both-

Separate- can use toilet if someone in bathroom, keeps toilet away from toothbrushes and towels, adds a buffer space between bathroom and dds bedroom so it's not too noisy in the morning BUT the bathroom is very small, definitely no room for a separate shower unit.

Knock through- bigger space to play with, can prob have separate shower but lose the benefits of separate and obviously a more expensive and bigger building job!

What would you do?

We also grew up with bidets, they are great

Trinacham · 18/01/2022 12:42

In your case I would combine.

We have a separate loo to where the bath/shower and sink are but wouldn't combine as we have no other loo!

I’m combining mine, but we have a downstairs toilet and a shower room in the loft

RebeccaManderley · 18/01/2022 12:51

I would keep them separate. You don't need a separate bath and shower cubicle, just have a shower over the bath and it is so much better to have a separate toilet when someone is having a long soak in the bath.
I know it has become fashionable to combine them but I don't like it. i see no need for a large bathroom.

For this that love a diagram- this is what I'm working with..... of course the bathroom people due today didn't turn up, so I have longer to work out what I actually want! 😂

With no sink in the toilet, absolutely combine the two.

Wilma55 · 18/01/2022 18:27

Make koo door open outwards leaving room for basin on wall

dafey · 18/01/2022 18:56

Do you not have a sink in the toilet?

Clarabellawilliamson · 18/01/2022 19:00

No sink in the toilet at the moment, could change the toilet for one of those with a sink in the cistern or perhaps fit a tiny one in if we decided to keep them separate

I didn't realise, if keep separate (which I prefer) you defo need a sink in there.

Snowiscold · 18/01/2022 19:07

We combined ours, and we don’t have another loo in the house.

WellTidy · 18/01/2022 19:21

We have an upstairs bathroom and separate loo. No sink in the loo (and no space for one either). We also have a downstairs loo.

Under no circumstances would I combine the loo and bathroom. Before we moved in, this is what we had planned, but having lived with it for years now, I wouldn’t do it.

That said, I do t have an issue with someone coming into the bathroom to wash their when I am already in it. I would however have an issue with someone wanting to use the loo if I was in the bathroom. So this works really well for us. I dont know if it makes a difference, but we have a bath and stand-alone shower in our bathroom (sometimes both are in use at the same time).

I would combine, I have this layout and if we were staying in this house it's the next improvement I would make.

Giggorata · 19/01/2022 06:11

There's a current thread about the sink cistern combination.
I'm one of those who recommend them, as I have a loo separate from the bathroom and want the extra cleanliness factor, as well as more convenient hand washing.
Not everyone can be tidy using a bum gun!

perrito · 19/01/2022 11:11

I have a separate toilet and bathroom which I definitely prefer, but it seems to be uncommon and only in older houses now. I find it really unhygienic to think of flushing the loo and having toothbrushes and face cloths out right next to it.

We don't have a basin in the toilet but it's something I plan to add, it's not too difficult to add a very small washbasin in there.

Sweetleftfood · 20/01/2022 09:13

We combined and I don't regret that at all, with two teenagers yes there can be a queue sometimes but we have a pretty good system going and also a separate toilet/shower downstairs.

bedington · 20/01/2022 09:23

Keep the loo separate....get a sink in there somehow.....I just do not understand the need to combine....if you think about it, it is revolting

banivani · 20/01/2022 10:18

I would absolutely never want to keep a toilet with no sink. The idea of having any sort of messy toilet experience and have to open door handles etc before I can wash my hands and then maybe not being able to get in ... Unless room for a sink - combine.

Clarabellawilliamson · 20/01/2022 18:45

So the first person came to look today and I thought he would definitely recommend combining (bigger job, more money) but he said keep them separate. If we combined and added a separate shower it would still feel cluttered.
He also reckoned the toilet was big enough to put a small sink in. Winner.
