Painting Marble Fireplace

Just wondering if anyone has painted over their marble fireplace surround?

I'm doing a feature wall (Dulux inkwell) and going to paint the wooden mantelpiece - not sure what colour yet, but feel the marble needs updating too, it's currently various shades of cream/fawn/brown

Any advice please?

Actually, a quick question, would you paint the wooden mantlepiece the same colour as the wall?

My advice would be don't paint the marble. When we moved here the Victorian dining room marble fire surround was painted white. I thought a couple of hours and a can of Nitromors would do it. It took two weeks.
Just worth bearing in mind should you ever want to get the paint off.

Not sure why you'd want to paint marble - that's how it ages I think, to a fawny colour. Part of the charm and a big period feature I'd think?

But marble is very porous and I can't imagine takes paint well?

Our house is not period-late 90's.

The fireplace in the pic is very similar to ours, when we redecorated about 10yrs ago, I removed all the fleur de lis etc and painted it cream, also spray painted the gold fire surround & grate black. However, I really don't t like the marble (if that's what it is) and looking for an easy way to upcycle.

Op, it's an absolute nightmare to remove paint from marble. Why not consider another option? Maybe vinyl wrap ? They come in all sorts of colours and textures etc

I’m doing one of mine which is an orangey tone. I’m using proper fireplace paint to turn it into limestone look. I’ve done the first coat

DustySpringboard · 17/01/2022 15:39

@HasaDigaEebowai what paint are you using and how's it going?

@Boogaloony that's an idea. Have also just been looking at upcycled fireplaces on Google and lots are using stick on tiles but my worry is that they'd not be fire retardant.

Tbh we should probably get a new fireplace but as we're having other works done I'm just after a quick refresh for the lounge.

A previous owner painted my marble fireplace gloss white.
I want to remove it.
I am assuming Nitrimore & a lot of patience is required.

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/01/2022 15:50

I’m using stonelux. It’s a sort of sandy texture like stone. So far so good.

DustySpringboard · 18/01/2022 10:03

Have ordered some Stonelux so thanks for the heads up HasaDigaEebowai

Yes, lots of Nitromors and even more patience. Make sure the area is well ventilated, apparently Nitromors fumes can kill you.

Oh no - I have a beautiful original 1930s fireplace and surround in my new house - it’s all been painted cream, including the tiles. I’ve managed to scrape some of the paint off the hearth tiles with a sharp tool but it’s heavy going. Not sure I have the stamina to try the surround if it takes weeks Sad

@TrickyD
Thanks for the tip. I'd like to restore it, but not to that extent! ;)

DustySpringboard · 23/01/2022 19:42

Just popping back to say after 3 coats of Stonelux primer and 3 of the top coat stone paint, my fireplace looks like I've installed a brand new one. Also purchased a metal spray and given the metal grate etc a freshen up.

I'm so pleased with the outcome.
