If you have two bathrooms/one bathroom and an ensuite...

Our lovely first home has two bathrooms (bathtubs) which are extremely outdated. Think khaki tiles and yellow bathroom suite, mold and staining... ew.

So, we're saving up to redo them and are at the planning stage. We'd like one to have a bathtub and one to have a biggish shower. The smaller could easily be made into an ensuite by moving where the door is.

For those of you who have lived for a while with two bathrooms, what works best for you? And what do you think we should do? Both to live with and hopefully not to decrease the value of our property (although no plans to leave!). We have DC under 10 if that is relevant. Thank you.

a) bathtub in family bathroom and shower in ensuite
b) shower in family bathroom and bathtub in ensuite
c) two family bathrooms and no ensuite.

Bathtub and shower in family bathroom
Shower in on suite

I wouldn’t choose to turn a second bathroom into an en-suite (I don’t understand why anyone wants a toilet directly off their bedroom) and I definitely wouldn’t install the only shower in the house in an en-suite - everyone who wants a shower then has to traipse through your bedroom to do so. And if this is a long-term home and you have more than one DC, I’d have a shower in both bathrooms or else you’re going to have one hell of a morning queue once they’re teenagers.
This. Absolutely this.

we have a family bathroom. Bath sink loo and bidet.

Ensuite shower room; large shower, loo, basin.

My friend and her family have a large en-suite with shower and bath and a family bathroom with shower and bath.
They have four children all of who prefer to shower.
This has caused issues because if the family bathroom is in use the kids insist on using the bathroom in the en-suite which is often inconvenient for my friend and her dh. In fact, there have been a number of occasions whereby the children have caught my friend and her dh in a state of undress.
Not a good idea to have one family bathroom and an en-suite when you have growing children or teenagers

The hate for ensuites in the UK I understand when often they are tiny and carved out of another tiny room.
I am abroad and most houses have an ensuite in each huge bedroom as well as a guest loo and washroom or two.
One house we lived in in the region had 7 bathrooms and 11 loos.
I think the best layout I have seen was a big master suite with two bathrooms and two dressing rooms off it.
I would have a spa bath in mine and my husbands would have a big power shower.

Family bathroom with a bath and shower, the same for an en-suite but if you can’t fit it in then just a shower.
I’ve had 2 en-suites and a family bathroom for the last 25 years and wouldn’t buy a property without at least one en-suite.
